No a thin casing layer (top layer for me put on at spawn ) should be fine and Imo better than a thick one.

I just use a layer of coir and verm from.my tub of sub saved over like stareatclouds said

Let your flush finish then rehydrate, at this point I wouldn't apply one for flush two myself. Just maybe do it next time if you want

Definitely don't put apply casing layers after a flush. At this point, tons of mold spores and other shit are on the surface and enclosing them in a moist tomb without FAE will promote their germination/growth.

33ish grams 1st flush. Something like that. 1qt of spawn to 1q coco.

I usually see 2 to 3oz total. I toss after 2nd flush tho

I average about an oz and a half first flush and half to a full oz on the second. Like Mushboy I toss after flush 2. Most ever was just shy of 80g dry full life span.

Is it alright if I bottom water my shoebox, and then wait 24 hours before pouring off any excess? Could it cause any issues if it sits too long?

I had to bottom water some of my boxes during winter because they were drying out.  I left the water for 24 hours and they were fine.

If you can see water pooling at the bottom after 24 hours that can only mean you're doing something wrong:

-You either bottom watered when the myc didn't really need it (no fruits yet to pump that water into or else, not a heavy flush so the extra water ain't needed).
-You just poured/squirted more water than myc needed.

If done right and when you should, the water from bottom-watering should get absorbed in a matter of hours.

Every time ive bottom watered there has definitely been a lot of water absorbed, however there is always some left over. Maybe its because im not good at judging exactly how much water to put in? I figure that its better too put too much than too little, and then just dump off the excess if need be, right?

Is there a way to figure out exactly how much water to pour in so that there will be no extra left over?

Edit: Not sure if it makes a difference but im bottom watering to rehydrate for the 5th flush. As of right now there are no pins/mushrooms using up the water.

Well if you just poured more than you should, leaving it pooling for some hours isn't going to be a problem.

Idk, I never bottom watered shoeboxes but I did bottom-water cased grains in a shoebox (2 quarts of spawn) and 60ml of water gets absorbed real quick.

However I've bottom-watered lots of bigger tubs and depending on how heavy the flush is some will absorb 60ml real quick and bigger flushes can take 2 shots with the 60 ml syringe in a matter of hours, no pooling whatsoever.

Do you have any pics of that shoebox? maybe it doesn't even need bottom watering.

My subs definately were drying out bad.  I was putting in 50cc.  It seemed like it absorbed about 40 and I would dump out about 10.  I didn't really know what I was doing,  but I new my sub needed some water

My understanding of bottom watering is to help with heavy flushes so they can flesh out a tad more. If you have to bottom water a shoebox because the sub just dries out then I think you need to up the water content of your sub when you prep it.

Unfortunately the subs are in there fifth flush and have a ton of aborts/pins with yellow-ish caps that never matured grow (Still completely unable to figure out why, no one seems to know). And they have already been bottom watering for a few hours, so it would probably be hard to tell at this point.

Even if they didnt need the water that bad, could it hurt it at all? I figure if they need some water they'll absorb it, and whatever they dont really need just gets dumped off and doesnt really hurt anything right?

I thought that bottom watering was only for heavy flushes as well, however mushboy told me that bottom watering is how he rehydrates his sub before flushes. I always thought it was necessary to fully dunk the substrate under water before flushes, but he said he just bottom waters and i think it seems to be working alright

I agree.  Haven't had to add water in awhile.
