Thanks for the good words
That looks awesome. How did you prepare your substrate?

Doesn’t get any easier then that does it! I guess I’ll put mine near the light now also I just spawned it a couple of days ago.

What did that dry to?

I did a bad thing and just threw them in the dehydrator with other fruits I had harvested from an AA+ mono. I’m sure it was probably around 30g or so after all the dried sub came off. My shrooms seem to be more like 91-92% wet weight

Alright, so I'm having an issue.
My field capacity is perfect, my room humidity is generally 50%+, room temp between 75-80f, and the tops of my subs keep drying like crazy, even with the lids clamped on I'm having to mist multiple times a day to keep it from looking like a desert in there. The rest of the sub is moist, so side pins pop up like crazy.
Could the fact that I used fine grade vermiculite be a cause?
My lights put off virtually no heat (maybe 2-3f difference, checked with a temp gun), so I don't suspect them
The room is ~10x12ft, with a standing fan on the opposite side of the room (for personal comfort, as my mushrooms and I share sleeping quarters ) Is the fan in the room causing it?
I'm getting plenty of healthy fruits, but I'd like to get my shoeboxes performing properly.

Looks and sounds just like how my set up was when I first started off with shoeboxes too, I found that using a thin layer of bulk sub when spawning, like less than 1/4 inch, to cover the grains helped produce more even pinsets
Gotta have my fan running all the time lol

DetectivePopcorn - would help to get some photos of your sub surface, as well as sides of the boxes for a general idea of what you're working with
Have you already harvested a full flush? If so, what was the amount of surface fruits like compared to side/bottom fruits?

I've been doing a thin C/V casing layer in my boxes, just enough to cover the grains, ironically enough, one of the boxes I spawned last week that I didn't have enough C/V left over to do a casing for is the only one that isn't dry as hell?
I'm on the 4th flush of my first successful shoebox, the side pins are minimal in comparison, I'd just like to figure out why I can't get my surface conditions to stay ideal.
As an example, here's a PE tub I spawned back on May 10th, these couple pins just showed up 2 days ago. I'm having to heavily mist it 3+ times a day, same with all of my tubs with the exception of my new uncased box and the one that's on it's 4th flush, and I think that's just because after the 3rd flush I added a new casing because it was looking really sad and I wanted to experiment with it at that point.

Thanks for the help and putting up with me
Maybe I'm just helicopter parenting again and I should hold off on the misting?

I have to agree with the above.I have found that using a top layer of coir/verm(or other bulk sub)gives me somewhat of a safety net with my surface moisture.Without the top layer,it will seem dry and I try to (over)compensate with misting which leads to matting/poor surface conditions.

I love how shoeboxes will tell you that you need to dub.

Hmm that one does look pretty dry on the surface and the sides are pulling away from the tub indicating drying up in the sub... have you not gotten a flush from that one yet or?
Is the moisture on the side walls from misting or is it just from the tub?
How heavy is the box when you pick it up? If it feels very light then this is another indication its drying up
If you spawned it on the 10th then that is enough time for it to dry up pretty well.. if you haven't gotten a flush yet then there's something wrong probably.. could just be too dry
Could be issues with not enough water in your sub prep or just your climate right now
Some side pinning is just basically normal and to only have a minimal amount of side pins is good, but if you're getting a ton and more than surface, then its a problem

I haven't gotten a flush from this one, and the first PE box I tried never even pinned, so I'm not sure if the syringe I started from is wonky or what, but that box represents what keeps happening to my subs after only about 2 weeks, so I posted it as an easy to understand example
The moisture is just from the misting at this point. They all start out nice and humid with moisture building up from colonization, but then after about a week, when they're looking nice and colonized, the sub starts looking dry and shrinking.
What moisture is left from the sub starts building up between the sub and walls, then the first pins start forming on the sides, and at that point I start misting to try and trigger them pinning on top.
My sub is for sure at field capacity, though.

Well its definitely dried out quite a bit for some reason. Very strange if it hasn't flushed and you prepared sub with enough water...
But if its dry, then give it some water. Slowly pour some water down the sides so it goes under the sub and let it soak in. Drain out any excess after a few hours or so.
You really shouldn't need to do this without a flush first, but in your case it seems to need it

I'll give it a shot, I'm still learning and experimenting so at the worst, it continues to do nothing. lol Thank you for the help
Edit*
Speaking of experiment, after the last (3rd) flush on my first shoebox, I added a thick casing layer because the sub was so shrunken and looking sad. Well, after doing so, I noticed some large pins growing on the bottom, so I flipped the sub, and these guys grew.

Ive since flipped it back over again because a few nice looking clusters popped up on the bottom, that was the top Not gonna make a habit of it, I was just curious how it would all go down.

1.make a shoebox

2.put the lid on like normal.
  let it sit for 5-7days..
3.until they look like these..

4.THEN pop the lid off and toss inside a mono..
OR flip the lid upside down and it sits like this.
OR!! just pop one end of the lid open like this..
 OR!!!! just rotate it 45degrees

either way..
once you expose the surface to air, it will dry out. keep it from drying out by misting. i only expose the surface to fresh air at step 4. not before hand. otherwise too much substrate can dry out and blah blah.
Hey mush, I understand when to flip the lid (thx for the pics), but when do I introduce light for fruiting? My assumption is that you flip it, then when knots show that’s when you introduce light? I wanted to clarify to be sure.

After seeing this I assume thats how to do it? I was confused that the light would not penetrate the lid. Does it?

My set up is like this (lights hanging above)

Don't think most people do the light directly on but whatever works.
Old pic, I have 0 boxes ATM. Gonna start more soon

Light does not introduce fruiting. FAE does
Light should be present the entire grow
It doesn't matter if the lid is blocking some light... I don't even use actual lights other than the normal room light in my ceiling. And even then I just have ambient window light in the room a lot of the time

Yeah it doesn't have to be at all. Like I said, I do a lot of my grows entirely with ambient room light only
I'm not sure I notice any difference when I actually use any of my grow lights

Good indirect sunlight is definitely ideal.
I don't use any ambient light as I have to be discreet.
But I only use my light when I am fruiting, never during colonization.
If they overlap that's fine
