I've been using 1/2 qt per shoebox with good results. Of course it will depend on genetics and other factors, but you can definitely get a good yield from just 1/2q

I have experimented with .5-1.5qt of spawn and I'm leaning towards a nice .75qt, a solid mycoquart. Do that 1:1 plus a about a half quart top layer and I expect fast thick flushes. Thinking about it makes me wanna buy a few dozen shoeboxes right meow...

How long do you guys typically let them colonize before fruiting? Or do they just kind of fruit automatically since they are in the same conditions the whole time?

I don't mess with colonizing/fruiting change ups.
I put my boxes, shoe or tub, into fruiting at spawn
There's a lot of discussion about which is best, or if it even matters, in different threads

Yes I actually discovered this for my self with one of my first shoebox grows by leaving it near a window which got bright sunlight during the afternoon. The my. Yellowed and matted up and didn’t fruit in that area until subsequent flushes
It probably yellowed and matted up because it dried up in that spot, as a result of heating up from the direct sunlight. (Not a cause of the light itself)
There are a few different things that can cause bruising, and sometimes it just happens
That is what happened. It wasn’t “probable.”

Was just clarifying because in context of that discussion it was being said it was due to being in the light, and its not the light causing the problem, its the generated heat

Say I fucked up, forgot to add my top layer of coir and verm, been a fee hours or a day or something since I spawned my box.
Can I go ahead and apply the top layer now or what's the best plan of action ?

or go ahead and throw one on there. A day or 2 after spawning isn’t gonna hurt it

So it’s been three weeks now since I spawned my 4 cake shoeboxes and still no pins. They are fully colonized with little beads of moisture on top. Would it be okay at this point to flip the lids and let the water evaporate to help pin? I’ve had them closed because I was waiting for the pinset, but maybe it’s time?

You could try but I usually wait. If there's beads of moisture I would guess that there IS evaporation, which is causing the beads of moisture.
I only take the lid off if theres no beads of moisture so I can mist.
Could be wrong
Should be enough FAE lid on
