pixelpopper said: I'm not saying I recommend it, but some of those canopy shoebox flushes I was getting which includes the photos I posted above, were grown open air with lids off except at night when I'd put the lids back on.
After this, I tried some different things to experiment but the initial ones I did open air during the day performed the best out of all.
It was probably just because it was my first set of shoeboxes and I was super into it, paying lots of attention to monitoring their daily conditions.
*Edit: I definitely would not recommend open air to a new grower
How many times were you having to mist with the lids open all day? I probably won’t try that this time but maybe once I get a grow under my belt I’ll give it a try. I’m home enough to watch their conditions all day but just need to learn what to look for first.

When you dub them are you still misting or does it hold enough moisture? Dubbing is probably the way I’ll go. Headed to go get some shoeboxes now I’ll probably start out with three.

IMO, this is one of the best reasons to do an open air grow - you really learn a lot about how the mushrooms grow in relation to moisture.
I had to mist a lot. I was always checking them and if the surface had dried up then I'd give a mist.
Misting is tricky business, its easy to overdo and if you are doing open air then it is also easy to let your sub surface dry out and then your myc gets matted, yellow and/or bruised.

If you got the time I highly recommend open air grows.

 Super educational

Alright you guys convinced me. I’ll do two shoeboxes normal and one open air. If it fails then I don’t mind it’s a learning experience. I’m not expecting much for my first time anyway

Be sure to put the lid on overnight or any time you won't be able to check it for a while
There are some open air threads on here - would probably be helpful to give them a read
Just keep in mind that the misting needs for open air vs not open air are worlds apart. You can get away with overmisting open air because it will evap, and this may lead you to think that lidded subs require misting when they don't.
In my experience, even when you cannot see water beads, lidded subs don't really need mist.

No shit! At first I read it as 28 grams. One ounce, no big deal. 1 3/4 pound. To the barbershop quartet, is a solid hookup. They must give a tight fade! Lol. I bet it was a typo.

Yeah I’ll make sure to put the lid on when I’m not home or not around it. I’ve read a couple open air fruiting threads but I’ll keep reading. I’ve been nonstop reading for the past month so much info my head hurts lol I’ll post in here once they get started probably this weekend sometime.

I like this line.Maybe change to "shouldn't" need mist.(there are times you'll need to)But for me it is safer to try to NOT mist as much as possible. That's usually what leads to overmisting.I try not to mist a shoebox at all til at least the first flush pinset comes in,if not after the flush.

Hey y'all quick question. Read about 10 pages of this thread so far and couldn't find an answer. I was just curious how much of a 650g brick of coir I should use to get what I need for this? I have 2 qts of spawn I'm going to use with 2 qts CVG. I just wanted to know the amount of stuff I need to add to get 2 qts of complete sub. I'm going to done 6qt dubtub.

I personally use 650 grams coir, 2 quarts vermiculite, 1 cup gypsum, 4 quarts water. Total it comes out to pretty much exactly 12 quarts of substrate, slightly over 12 quarts usually but not much. Im considering upping the water to 4.5 quarts next batch tho.
