Just made my first three shoe boxes and pretty excited.
One is two temazepac pf cakes on pasteurized manure, coir and verm. Makes about 60:40 in favor of substrate.
The other two are popcorn (as above), one has half as much spawn as the other (70:30 ish).
Stupidly forgot the gypsum, but just going to leave them to colonize and cross my fingers.
One day in and showing first signs of colonisation which is pleasing.

Better cover the popcorn with a coir/manure. I would worry of easy contam with straight grain. Though popcorn is different.

Do you mean case it now rather than in a few days? I might experiment with one and do a side by side...I'll be chuffed if the spawn cracks on despite the possible low ph.

Usually using straight grain doesn't work well unless the grain is colonized quick enough so that no surface contams fuck with cobditions. Though i don't know how well popcorn is colonized by the bad stuff.

Sorry if I'm being thick here...are you saying I should ensure the spawn is buried in the substrate and not be exposed to the surface?
That sounds totally counter intuitive to me...The grain will be the most resistant part of the mixture to contamination as it's covered in mycelium...it's close to 50:50 spawn/grain mix so I'm hoping for a speedy colonisation...or at least not a really slow one. The mix probably measures an inch thick.
If I've missed your point I apologise

The popcorn is spawn in a manure/coir verm substrate...not sure if the way I wrote my first post was confusing

Not sure if I should go buy 3 extra 12 quart shoeboxes to dubtub 'em but wanted to see how these worked so I picked up 3, spawned some g2g pe6 1:1 ratio of 3 jars of spawn and CVG. 1st try made on the 05.03.18 but pics just now

Lookin really nice!
I'd dub them when the fruits reach the top. These popped the lid so I dubbed it till they we're done.

Oh right...So you are saying that even fully colonised popcorn is more vulnerable to contams than brf?
I was only if r the understanding that it's less preferred by some on here based on the likelihood of contamination when making as spawn.. Pre colonisation.
Personally, I'm a big fan of it and not found any issues with contams.
Lovely pictures above by the way.

As long as its fully colonized healthy spawn, no matter if its brf, popcorn, rye, wbs, etc, it'll be resistant to contams and fine to spawn in open air.
I think he was maybe thinking that you were just filling a tub up with just popcorn and no substrate or something, not sure tho.

Suddenly feeling inspired to share: First ever grow going on up here; a combo of some pf tek as well as few of the cakes shredded and combined with sub to into some shoeboxes. That all said, first shoebox is fruiting and I want to offer up some deep appreciation for all of the guidance along the way.

Coir/verm mixed up with two 1/2 pint grated brf cakes cased with more of the coir/verm. Did one cased and one not to see the difference. The non-cased one is kind of lame in comparison.
