The sides look like they are a bit slower than the top is going. Right now I have out tented with a shopping bag rather than going with the shoeboxes lid to help retain moisture a bit better. It's really dry here during the winter.

Did your box come with a matching lid? The one I have did, but it's pretty loose fitting. You still want some fresh air exchange, and i dont know but i would think bags would restrict that exchange. I like to keep a spawn bag or jar on top of my lid, just so theres some pressure keeping it tight but not fully sealing it. I imagine you could use anything with a little weight just to keep the micro environment closed.

Bod was actually the one that I could tent it rather than using the lid. I'm just wondering if I should mist a bit or not. There's no beads of moisture built up on the surface, but it's still defiantly moist in there.

Yeah that's where I'm at. I don't want to drown it out or mess with it if it doesn't need it.

Mateah said: Interesting. I´ll upload a pic later from one of the shoeboxes when I get home, the surface is completely covered in coir and also completely covered in pins. The best pinsets I´ve seen in my tubs come from underneith the top layer that is barely colonized. But as we all know you can get great pinset without a top layer, and also with a fully colonized top layer. But IME a late top layer creates the best conditions.
That is very interesting. I thought the myc had to break the top layer to produce the pinset. Maybe I just don't have enough experience. As I said, I've always waited for the top layer to be completely colonized as well, so I don't have much to compare it to. I also always put my top layer on as soon as I spawn. Flip the lid and dub at a nice pinset / mushroom starting to grow.
I totally agree with you that from one point of view the myc should be able the breathe as much as possible and to evaporate off moisture, and this seems more easily achieved without the top layer, I just havent been able to create an impressive pinset without a late top layer. I think I have to practice more without the top layer to see what the myc likes the most.
even though this isnt a shoebox, its a larger 16qt bootbox .. this is how i want damn near every surface to look with a top layer.
the myc has colonized through the top layer but not enough to completely cover the coir. cant wait for this to explode with apes. knots galore. i have high hopes for this tub
i dont like when the surface completely colonizes like this
i can never pill dense pinsets when i let them colonize 100%
This the shoebox with the late top layer.
A few days before pinst started to appear, the white looking spots is verm but it looks like myc.

This is 3-4 days after pinning, you can see that the myc has barely started to colonize the top layer, when the pins first appeared there was virtually no myc on the surface.

You can´t see it in the pic but there are hundreds of baby pins right under the surface. I´ll update in a couple of days when most of them have emerged.

How do you all go about reusing your sterilites? I've been doing a quick rinse in the dishwasher with good results, but this last run I had two boxes trich out and I don't want to spread that shit everywhere. I took them outside and dumped them away from everything else. I'd rather not throw them away, can I do a wipe down with bleach or iso and then run them through the dishwasher?

I don't ever use the dishwasher. I wash everything by hand. Especially my lids.

I fill my biggest bin (100qt I think) with bleach and soap water. All the shoeboxes go in for a soak and get scrubbed with a bristley brush thinger.

I wash my tubs by hand. Don't use a nasty old sponge either. Fresh paper towels are great as a sponge (Viva my Neros, it's the best).

Same here. Wash with hot water and soap, wipe down with wet paper towel, rinse and dry

Sometimes in a sink with dish soap and a scrubber brush, sometimes I wipe with alcohol or 10% bleach solution. Depends on how dirty they are.

No man, don't do that. The scrubber brush is gonna scratch everything up. You want gentle, scrubbing actions

I do it all these ways. It just depends. Idk how many boxes you guys have, but I could restock my collection for about the cost of a premium 6 pack of beer.

I use a plastic toilet brush on a drill and it doesn’t scratch, ymmv but my shoeboxes look pretty much the same as the day I bought them. Plus if you have clean spawn whatre you worried about?

Yeah plastic is cheap, but I don't want to grow in a bunch of scratched up tubs. I don't think it's safe.
