Hopeless_Hound said: Mush my point is I’m using grain like agar. Agar isn’t necessary because YOU CAN CLEAN CULTURES WITH GRAIN!!!!! It’s actually much less susceptible to mold spore growth than agar is. Please tell me what isn’t possible with my method, I can make transfers, hell I could isolate, clone. Etc. agar is unnecessary and for the work we are doing it. Tell me why do we use agar if you can do the same thing with grain?
This is fundamentally wrong. You cannot clean cultures with grain. You are flat out wrong. Grains contains endospores. Endospores are not killed with a 2 hour 15psi PC cycle. It would require something like a 24 hour 15 psi PC cycle to completely kill endospores. When we PC grains, we are simply damaging the endospores. This is why PC'd jars of grains have a set shelf life and will contaminate if let sit for too long, generally around 2 weeks is when the endospores revive and start to germinate.
Anything that has grains in it has endospores in it. This is why Grain Liquid Culture teks, aka GLC, is among the lowest on the totem pole of inoculation teks. Sure, it will work, sometimes. But there are way better methods out there.

You completely misunderstand the reason we even use agar. We want it to inhibit growth. Nothing hides on agar, thats how we know the culture is clean, because anything and everything will readily grow on it. So a visual inspection of an agar plate is the best indicator you have in mycology that a culture is clean or not. That is simply not possible with grains because the presence of damaged dormant endospores that will remain in them permanently. And as others may know, bacteria writes open invitations for molds.
Check your attitude, it doesn't coincide with your expertise or research in amateur mycology.

Way easier to see becauseof growth on a two dimensional plane vs 3dimensional. You can't avoid that, and a possible faster colonization on the plate, which may help cut away from something and ultimately save a culture.
I think everyone here appreciates seeing new approaches, make your own thread but I'd ask you don't state it as fact as better than agar because so many first timers will do anything someone says.
I also think you should eat a slice of humble pie bro, lol, you think you cured cancer and you're challenging everyone to point out things wrong with it and I can see one or two already and I'm a noob.
As shroommancy said, bacteria would concern me. And 2d is huge to me.

Back on topic post here. For the past week I said fuck it and threw every lid and dub in a pile. The results were very positive. Increased growth height, speed, and over all yield. So now I am going to attempt an entire run from pins open air.

Could any one confirm this? I would appreciate any input. Also included is a pic of fruiting area, again if anyone would be so nice as to share some pointers , links.

I noticed some green in this atl#7 shoebox when I opened the lid yesterday so I went ahead and harvested the stones. It was only in one tiny spot on the casing and everything smelled normal. I'm curious as to how the stones differ with different substrates. The ones I pulled from the wbs spawn before making this shoebox looked and felt different than these which look like small potatoes. EDIT- My bad, the sub was 50/50+ with sand added

What are "proper surface conditions" for shoeboxes?

What am I missing about the sclerotia or stones?
A few kinds of mush produce them and fruits, but aren't the fruits more potent?
Stones are sought-after because they're rare and neat and look crazy?

some guy i knew(dealer type) was convinced only truffles could be made into chocolates because mushrooms rot in chocolate and ladies like chocolate.
i saw this guy turn down wild picked shrooms because he wanted to make chocolates with them. what a noob(i later ate those wild shrooms) the fruits are more potent than cubes. and have a slightly different edge to them. and they are just another species to cultivate.

Some grow both? Think I read PE6 and ATL7, both of those can grow both stones or mushrooms, and the potency is different between the stones and mush?

vice has a documentary on active sclerotia
stones are sought after from a cultivation pov cause they only need a jar to grow in

Stones are dead simple. Set and forget. Mexicana strain produce sclerotia. I can't say whether the stones are more or less potent that the fruits. I haven't had the opportunity to compare yet
