Okay... maybe no oysters indoors. That sounds crappy. Might as well grow some black mold in the basement.

I've made a fuck ton of mistakes along the way and hopefully I'll learn from them and make improvements in my future grows. The surface pinset could have been much better and I'm also getting a shit ton of side pins as seen here.

If anyone can chime in, I'd be grateful for some criticism. Being my first foray into anything mushroom related, there's a bit of a Dunning Kruger effect where I'm too incompetent to precisely identify my incompetencies.
My guess as to why I got a shit ton of side pins is (let me know if I'm wrong here):
1. Sub shrank from walls very early on. I mistakenly (?) thought fruiting in shoeboxes meant flipping the lid + misting. I overlooked the fact that spawning grains to these shoeboxes is basically fruiting at spawn since these lids allow for lots of passive FAE from the outset. I flipped the lid around 7-8 days in (at around 80% colonization) and the sub dried up reaaaaal fucking quick. This is even with misting 4-6 times a day. At a minimum, I think I should have kept the lid latched on until I started getting some pins.
2. Top layer wasn't level, corners weren't mixed well, and I overlooked mixing those little fucking ridges at the bottom! For some reason I was paranoid about packing the top layer too tightly so I made it as loose and airy as possible. This resulted in bumps, valleys and dips all over the surface. Combined with over drying, the loose top layer dried out super quick!
Once harvested, agar will be next!
For your first grow it's looking pretty damn good man! I can honestly say my first couple attempts did not go so well untill I got my ass onto the shroomery and read for about a week straight lol.
And the fact that you already know where to start improving on your next grow is golden man. Keep us posted brother.

proustdreams,
That's an excellent first grow. Seriously, most fail multiple times before getting a bulk grow down. So WRT Dunning-Kruger, I'd say your inexperience is likely to make you believe your results are average or below average, but they're far from it for a beginner. Keep that in mind.
Regarding your sidepins, there's a few ways people treat/discuss those. In a vacuum, they're caused by the microclimate provided between the sub and tub walls, e.g., moisture and evaporation. The general consensus to avoid these is ensuring the surface of the substrate has ideal/better conditions so pinning/fruiting takes place there instead. This is a major reason people use liners in bigger tubs (it's a PITA for shoeboxes, I don't do it) because the inside of the liner sticks to the sub as it shrinks, effectively preventing the conditions I described above (usually). Some people pat down the sub a bit. I personally don't do much wih shoeboxes, it's tougher to dial them in due to their setup and I don't mind a few sidepins. So I just shoot for optimal surface conditions.
Regarding FAE and lids, just do what the sub needs. It'll tell you. I leave my lids on until pins. If the sub looks dry (at any point), mist it. I put a thin layer of extra CVG on top during spawning/fruiting. If this gets gray and dry, I mist it when it needs it. If it looks wet, leave the lid off. Cubes are forgiving and a short period of either column won't fuck anything up. If there's a heavy pinset, you might want to pour a little water down the sides to support them. During fruiting, I'll often mist heavily and leave the lid off for the night as I think the extra evaporation helps (FAE without drying shit out completely is always good).
Awesome first grow. I'm very impressed and I hope you stick around.

So here is the shoebox I spawned with 3 brf cakes or Puerto Ricans to 2 quarts cvg, I added a casing layer at 100% colonization to test out if I could achieve better pinsets and I like the results.

So I learned that you should carefully pick up your shoeboxes or it will pull the substrate away from the side of the tub.. Side pin city now! and the side pins just push the tub side away even further
either way.. some nice stuff showing up for my first time! Thanks to the shoebox thread of course <3 <3

Lol wish I had a good story but long story short I recently bought a vape to quit smoking cigs. While misting the tub the other day the vape fell out of my pocket and bounced off my wire rack, the top part of the vape opened up and a bunch of ejuice splashed all over that corner Not my finest moment, in retrospect it prob aly would have been fine but I didnt wanna risk it with all the nicotine and what not.

Just took this photo 5 min ago. Thought I had good results with manure & c/v/g then I tried 6QT DubTub set up. Just coir, Kona coffee grounds, lil gypsum and spawm and this is whats coming out on first flush

Thick, solid, tight! Mine need to lift more weights, they’re spibdly and lanky compared to yours. Looks like we both started our first grows right around the same time! I spawned my grains to bulk on 1/28ish for most tubs.
