Ullr, how many jars of spawn are in your shoebox? I was using 1jar of spawn to 1.5 quarts of coir/verm and had small mushrooms. I doubled everything and got much larger fruits. Probably because of the depth of substrate. I always heard you want 3-4 inches height of your sub for optimal conditions, when I was getting small ones to the sub was probably a bit over an inch of so...

Sometimes ms grows ahit the bed too. Iβdd guess over or underwatering first followed by shite genetics, but prepH is right that sometimes thin subs cause small fruits, Iβve noticed this more with monotubs than shoeboxes though. And Iβve pulled decent sized fruits off 1:1.5 shoeboxes when misted properly

Three small jars, around a quart or so total (my PC is small, I can get more in there this way). About 1:1.5 spawn/sub ratio. 2 inches sub depth.

I have 4 shoeboxes - started 1/10/18 w/ 3 (Penis Envy, Malabar & Golden Teacher) & added 4th 1/15/18 (Puerto Rico).
Coir or coir/verm mix, layered WBS spawn. Mostly 1 x 500ml jar of spawn to 2qt sub. I did lightly mist the surface before lids went on. Lids have not been off since started. Malabar is colonizing best so far.

Thanks very much - I will. I'll also try more "mix", the layering seems to let me control placement of spawn (of which I have usually have minimal). Worried about mix not being "even".

Getting a little concerned about this shoebox. Spawned 14 days ago, dubbed for about 5 days now. No misting for the last couple days per advice I received on here. The coir I can see looks very dry and light brown. Advice?

That thing is about to explode. Give it a few light mists, just to get the surface glistening. Like three pumps of the spray bottle should be enough

I've noticed the knots, they've been there for about 5 days now. I'd love to know how to best support them. I've read a lot and I thought I was doing well with my misting (maybe once a day, just tiny bbeads on the surface). A couple pages back I was told to stop misting. When do I start again?

You want there to always be a glisten to your surface, especially when knots form otherwise they won't form into pins, keep a constant glisten, you should notice if your overmisting, when you do small pools will form and fill with metabolites, just keep the surface glistening with beads of moisture.

6qt Malabar shoebox started 01-10-18. Nice white patches of colonization showing. This is side view, held up to light.

Great thread, very helpful.

Mazatapec, WBS spawned inside freeze bags to see how those would fruit inside shoe boxes. This spawn was a bit suspect and the results are indicative of this but nevertheless a decent harvest 501g from 1qt spawn. CanΒ΄t wait to try this out with better clones and clean spawn
