O yea something I want to mention about shoeboxes. I have had some GOOD results open air fruiting for a few hours before harvest. They for sure get bigger. Like I had one this morning that I knew I would have to harvest by tonight. So I left if out in the open and well there is about another inch, maybe more, in height from earlier.

I started doing the same and have gotten the same results. I left one tray open and got home from work and seriously thought I had mixed them up because of how tall they had gotten, almost doubled in size in 10 hours

Maybe I'll try an open air one next, you guys casing it I assume too?
I like stacking them though, cant stackem if they don't have lids.

I didn't case these and I only open air when working in the general are so I can keep an eye on them. Then I leave in the open air for about 6hrs before harvest. I just harvested my 4th shoebox @ 649g from 2qt spawn. I'm on phone now but will post pics later.

I always use a โcasingโ layer of coir like 1/4inch to cover all the grains, otherwise i would note it Tbh I donโt stack mine unless theyโre colonizing

Im having a rough time with my shoeboxes. They were spawned nine days ago. I introduced them to fruiting conditions 4 or 5 days ago and started misting once in the morning and once before I went to bed. I was reading about increasing FAE, so I decided to go to sleep with the lids off them last night and came to a couple of very dried out subs this morning. One is alot worse than the other, very bruised In places. The mycelium was drinking whatever I sprayed at it all day today, and the surface looks very matted. Any tips? I wont be experimenting with my method anymore until I gain some experience with a successful grow.

Do the reverse. Lid off when you are awake and nearby with your trusty spray bottle. Lid on or in a mono when you're sleeping or away for more than 2 hours.
The easiest way? Add a casing layer at 100% colonization of coir, verm,or pastuerized jiffy mix. Some people like top layers like germs mentioned earlier. In my experience it just colonizes the casing layer like an extension of the sub if added initially.

I do that any time I am doing agar work, or just not busy where I can constantly check on them.

Your flushes have been getting better and better TMH. New clone or new methods?

New clone and now using a flow hood instead of a SAB. I am also working harder on surface conditions. Before this it was all MS grows, cleaned on agar, well cleaned as best as I could, shite hides some times. I was also having BAD results with the Costa Rica variety. The biggest shroom it ever gave me was maybe 5-6 inches and the stipes were always thin.

I originally posted a photo of a shoebox that had been contaminated and going against suggestions I kept it going. Turned out pretty good, but this has lead me to many more questions. Why would you not want to keep contaminated shoe oxes if they still yield mushrooms?

Spreading shit all over your house make it harder for next time. The problem came from somewhere now there's more of that somewhere.

This is obviously true in some regard, but would you say the additional risk is the same for fungal and bacterial contaminates?

for me? its all about space and time spent doing better things.
why nurse a shitty tray along when i have more things i need to spawn? and id rather think about surface conditions then the potential spore load nightmare im also releasing into the area.
in basic terms.. fuck that shitty tam-yield. i need oz+ per quart. not wasting my time with that trash. fuck mold

I'm thinking more about bacterial trays than fungal. For instance I have a tub of p. Caerulescens showing metabolites that I've continued to fruit. Still smells like cucumbers. Sounds like my problem is needing more things to spawn...

Iโm curious about that caerulescens you got going on, what did you use for spawn and aub and what are the growing parameters?

Spores -> BRF -> CVG in an unmodified 20qt tub at ~68ยฐ. I'm growing it alongside some cubensis. I've been making notes in here: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=2&Number=24834839

This is what I assumed. Microbial aerosols are a thing though so was curious about people's thoughts.
