I always consolidate my APE spawn a week after full colonization. I’ve only done like 10 qts of it so far though so I’m not sure of the benefits. But I haven’t gotten blobs so I’m gonna keep it up

Nice writeup. I used to make growboxes (PF TEK) by myself. Great way to create mushrooms and no having to buy them. Will Try this TEK someday! You sir are an artist!

I cover my tubs with a thin layer of CVG and leave them alone for the most part until pins where I mist. I never add another/true casing layer after the top layer of CVG has been covered. I never use 50/50 or anything else.

I don't put them in monos thou. I either just leave the lids on or dub them.

I just put the lids on lightly. Never really mist or anything. They just push the lid up.

So, I'm getting ready to begin my first experiment this weekend... spore prints -> grain water agar -> grain jars -> CVG shoeboxes. So obviously I've been lurking on this thread lately.
One thing I noticed which confuses me, in a mathematical way, is the spawn to sub ratios people are describing. I see a lot of 1:1, and almost as many 2:2. Are these not mathematically identical, ie 1:1?
On a separate question... Is a two layer plastic liner of benefit as opposed to a single layer? I have noticed some of those using monotubs recommend two layers.
Thanks for the awesome information, and the great pics!

They are identical but 2:2 is easier than saying 1:1 but using 2 quarts of each...
I’ve done a few projects with double liners and with single, didn’t notice a difference in terms of usefulness personally. I’ll do double or single depending on whatever is easiest for the bags I have and the container I am spawning to.
Good luck with everything! Let us know how it goes.

fishermanjc, thank you for the reply!
I figured the ratio thing was something like that, basically just double the amount, but still equal parts.
With the liners, I'll just see how things go. Maybe try some each way to get the feel for it. It will be a little while before I'm ready to do the shoeboxes. (I think )
I will probably try to do a little log of my first attempts as I go along. Hoping it will help me remember my techniques and hone the skills in further attempts.

Coir, Verm, Gypsum.
Harvested these yesterday and came to a little over a dry qp. about 4 and a 1/4. Was a little less than I thought it would be ! But definitely happy.
7 qt spawn total.

I accidently reyhydrated these sub completely underwater for about 8 hours or so. Anyone ever hydrate that long? I'll see what happens...

Is there any value to adding gypsum to your dunk/bottom water?

Same here. I see people say tap water makes no difference but I don’t find that to be the case. I use it for hydrating grains/ bulk sub but that’s it. Even with distilled vinegar in every run, my new Presto that’s only had a handful of uses already has scale and water deposits on the inside and the lid where water condensates. Not to mention if I put it away before it dries, it smells when I take it out the next time.

I don't know man. Look closer at that last picture. I'd still have the water tested.
