I'm a believer now, these things flush so quickly and they're just easy as hell, 1 quart of spawn+1.5 quarts of sub= and

Yep, I'll never do a regular size mono again. I'm building a stand that will hold 20 shoe box's dub tubed in a 3×1×5 ft area.

Munch, Do you find the weight of stacking them leaves less fresh air availability? I've seen your tubs they look good I'm just thinking out loud here.
I've Bin flipping lids til pins are an inch or so then dub them. The fuckers do fall off easy though.

So I've made it through 59 pages of this thread and am not clear on one thing. Could some of you detail clearly your methods for "Bottom watering"? When do you bottom water, what is your technique for application of water, how much do you use, is draining required, how often do you do it? Is the idea to get the water UNDER the substrate by pouring into a corner where the sub has receded?
Amazing thread btw, thanks for all the great info and picture sharing. A true teaching thread if I ever saw one!

You're overthinking it if you think there's any technique. You literally pour water that's my method. When? When you think it needs it.

I pour some bottled spring water into a corner or side of the substrate where its shrunk away from the plastic. Let it sit for an hour or so then drain it out. Pretty simple

Yeah I have a tendency to over think. I have been trying to play catch up since leaving the shroomery 18 or 19 years ago. Lots of info to go through, and lots of changes.
Also, your new avatar is disturbing!

Y'all ever use the 16 quart totes right next to the 6 quart shoe boxes? They're like $2.99 and hold quite a bit more sub, but still not huge like a regular.

You will see the sub pulling away from the walls, and that will create a gap. Some people bottom water if this happens first flush from what I can tell, I personally would probably just get 1 flush and then bottom water before flush two. But, some people say if you have a huge pin set the sub needs the extra water to push out some good size mush. I just accept what it gives me, I also use verm and go on the wet side of a field capacity (key words, field capacity). I use a water bottle to apply water.
Usually if the gap is small ill just fill It up until its almost to the top layer of the sub. If there is a big gap I pour a bunch of water in there. Wait like 2-4 hours is what I do, then pour out the water.
It is super simple, but I can definitely remember how mysteries things were before i got some experience doing it, so I understand why you ask. Don't want to fuck anything up
You'll find its actually all easy as fuck. Good luck

I will often squirt water into the sides of the liner and near big clusters for APE long before the sub pulls away, but APE are notoriously thirsty and require extra water. This is also in bigger full-size tubs where the water evaporates a lot more and there's liners. I'm not super well versed in shoebox grows, but it seems like the condensation these is more prevalent and goes back into the sub in the absence of a liner, making it not as important to bottom water immediately.

The Romans made the holes. He's jacking in defence. It's quite beautiful.
I've been considering doing shoeboxes, but I'd rather have one giant tub. I'd be concerned with 1 box colonizing/fruiting before another. I know it's not a big deal. I, personally, want to have all the mycelium together.

for me it would be $0.13 for the 1 quart of oat spawn (103 quarts per bag 12.99 a bag) $0.30 for the coir (5kg for $10 using ~130g coir per shoebox as a guess 1/5th of a brick) $0.99 for the tub (unless you have one)
then the electricity to sterilize and run the lights.
The beer I drink while I do mycology work costs way more than mycology work.
