If you think it's fucked I'd do a dunk and just let it sit in water for 4 hours, couldn't hurt.

That's actually what I just finished doing. I picked some of the mushrooms which were growing - all very small and a lot of mutant looking ones which just stalled out. Upon picking them it was obvious they were very dry. I was worried there may be some contams involved so I had been reading up on potential contams, but after a close inspection it seems the developing fruits were very moisture stressed. Seems the lack of moisture just totally fucked everything on these.
So I picked the surface clean and then picked up the box-cakes and the sub felt fairly dry also. But the bottoms looked great.. lots of knotting, pins and developing fruits.. and the surface conditions of the bottom were ideal. So I flipped all of them and now they are getting a partial dunk to rehydrate.
Will see how it goes from here.
Lesson learned: either keep the lids or make sure the surface moisture stays consistent all day and night, and provide any needed watering as well.
I had actually bottom watered my previous shoeboxes at least once during first flush as well.
My coir is prepared on the "wetter side" so I do not have issues with lack of moisture in my sub initially.
I don't know if its my particular environment, variety genetics or what, but I seem to need to provide quite a lot of attention with the moisture.... at least for these shoeboxes.

The GT pf cake shoebox is fruiting!
Not a great pinset, but not too bad for MS. There's a lot of small pins and some larger fruits closer to spore. Should I pick those now and let the smaller ones grow more?

Pick em as they are ready.
The only time I would hold off picking a mushroom is if its in a cluster and picking it would tear up attached, smaller mushrooms that aren't ready.

Pixelpopper I just learned the same lesson. My 4 shoe boxes fruited once and are trying to flush again but I really messed up thinking I could manage moisture levels while having a f/t job and normal life. I got a respectable amount considering the amount of time the harvest will last but no where close to optimal. I’m a perfectionist so this goes down as a failure but that’s just part of learning. Now I know I can’t just think “well I’m home enough” it’s either “I can do this” or “I need to find a way to manage this”
Good luck to you!

That's the Achilles heal of the shoe box. It requires a good bit of attention. I'm always home or near by and enjoy the hands on approach so it's not an issue. If I was away for 12 hours at a time it would be difficult to properly take care of them.

A casing layer would help in that situation

What type of casing would be best in your opinion?
Pseudo case (use a small bit of sub without spawn on top) Coir only Or jiffy mix ( 50/50+)
I’ve been having issues with my subs getting dried and matted trying to open fruit, even with misting ever hour or two. I know it’s more of a problem once it’s already happened and I’m working on getting my surface conditions right from the start (if I use Saran Wrap on the shoebox for 5-7 days instead of just the lid, then switch I do much better)

Wait till its 70%colonized then use coir or verm/peat pasteurized

My main problem seems to have been overnight periods when I'm sleeping. For example I woke up one day and went to turn lights on, and they all had surface bruising from drying out overnight. It just got worse from there, while the bottom surface stayed optimal. I had put the shoeboxes in my SGFCs, still in the shoebox tubs, but figured I'd try leaving the lids off. I thought they'd be alright since they were in the SGFCs with lid on, and would just give them a morning mist to rehydrate after the long night, but guess the surface dried up too much in this period leading to bruising, some yellowing on one, and eventually a bit of that dead myc look.
They may have recovered if I had started misted every couple hours like before, but maybe my whole approach was just too off this time around.
At any rate, they are looking pretty decent right now post-flip-dunk

Once i started useing a pure coir layer on top when mixing the tub it aeemed to help with the drying out. Before i would have massive shrunken subs and poor top conditions even when i dubtub it.

Well I decided not to clone anything from my 3 pe6 box's. Their almost all mature and not one mushroom is even touching the lid. These are some of the smallest shrooms. So fucking potent though I got spun off a gram. My buddy ate and eight on an ssri which usually blocks all the effects and he was out of his mind.

Biggest shrooms are weighting about 6-8 grams wet.

So not the yeilds your looking for but great potency.

Yeah your right. I've had mushies where I ate 5 grams and barley felt it and ones where a gram or two blew me away. However I think I can find one that's big and potent. Plus I just love growing all kinds of different varietys.

Bottom watered. Green on all 3 the next day.
I banished them them outside to a box. All the fruits are small and deformed. I think this variety looks completely different than GT i was running previously. Now i wonder what variety it is.

Mine looked similar to yours I thought it was a contam. It was just brusing, that's what yours look like. There fine.
Where are you seeing deformities? They look like normal shrooms to me.

How many trays do you guys use per one dehydrator? I just harvested one shoe box. 250 g wet. Now three of my four trays are jam packed! There not thick shrooms very thin so there drying fast but holy fuck I'd need 10 trays for all of them.

You can fit 6-8oz dry without extra trays. Cram that shit.
250 wet would easily fit on one tray if you found yourself with 5 more boxes of that

Ok I though they had to be not overlapping at all. I just put them in close. In 3 hours they shrunk like crazy.
