Making shoeboxes 93

I was bored. made a shoebox write up. couldnt find too many. made it simple.
Experience shoeboxes Small spawn trays by Ziran Stoopid simple way to fruit your shoebox
GET YOUR FIELD CAPACITY DOWN!!
Shoeboxes are a lot of fun. they are a great go-between from trays in a sgfc to full blown monos. a normal tote can hold 3 shoeboxes/trays. You can also just crack the lid and fruit inside its own tote. super multitasking.

Each tray can hold up to six quarts. you can make some hefty trays with a 1:1 ratio. normally i do 2 quarts spawn and 2quarts cvg. Filling up the mono with the trays is basically they same as doing a mono. the same principals of the mono are in play. a good thing is that if 1 tray goes bad you can localize and toss it without disrupting the remaining trays. seeing a speck of trich on a gaint mono sucks ass.
I use 80qt totes.

Each shoebox is about a dollar depending on where you shop. i prefer to grab them at target. the ones at mega hardware stores are always filthy with thick dust. the ones at target are always super clean. i avoid walmart at all costs.

Get you spawn ready! today will be 2 quarts of AA+, 2q of mexican(cube) and 1q from a jar that had the label fall off. oops.

Take your coco based substrate(I PCed mine in 4qt batches)

Then i dump my spawn in the shoebox.
dump in 1.5 quarts... roughly.. of PCVG.

Mix it all up really good. get in the corners. be thorough. I just use gloves wiped with iso. you can go bare handed but i hate dirty nails.
Make it as level as you possibly can. I get really upset with myself if i do not make them level.
I then clean up the edges with a wet iso cloth and apply the remaining half Q(roughly) as a top layer to cover grains and make level.

4 total quarts fills it right to the fabricated ridge in the tote. makes leveling easier
  SUPER OCD ABOUT BEING LEVEL!
Sometimes you realize you didnt mix it up that well.. its not a big deal but try to mix it up your best.

Thats all. repeat as needed. Label as desired. I like to label with..
-variety -date when tray was made(today) -how much and what type of sub used
when you have lot of different things going, proper labeling is super important
(i cracked my tote. fixed it with packing tape. who cares)

but 1.5inch subs can put out monsters easily if hydrated.

This. Available water and specific genetics has more to do with fruit size than sub persay. Of course a large bulk sub has a lot more water to draw from which often results in larger fruits but, you can get big fruits from even a pf cake if you supply enough water.

I label it as PCVG. it sounds cool.
but its just pressure cooked coco with 80% coco 20% verm and a handful of gypsum.

thats a good way to get people to not like you :p
its all good dood just dont overthink it. you mix up the cvg in whatever container you have around. 1 brick needs 4.5 quarts of water..roughly. mix it all up. load into bags/jars. pc, use when needed.
dont over think it.

no fans needed. maybe if you have a room of 500 shoeboxes. they get plenty of FAE through the lids.

The Sloth said: I'm curious why there are no liners on the shoeboxes?....
i hate making them and thb (elite shroomery attitude incoming) i think of them as a crutch for side pins. if your surface conditions are on point you do not get side pins. side pins mean your surface conditions are off. the pins prefer to grow elsewhere. I want them to grow on the surface. so i better figure out what they want that im not goving them... ya dig?

Is there a functional reason for their absence or are these containers small enough it just isn't worth the trouble?
since a shoebox is handheld you can clean it out with a paper towel and your mister. it is not worth the trouble for me. i find making liners extremely difficult for some reason. and after all. im trying to grow mushrooms. not play arts n crafts.
also you can spot contams and see if your spawn develops bacteria during fruiting.

UPDATE!!
the shoeboxes pinned the other day. i've been distracted by weed oil 1 of the boxes is not inside the mono. its just out on a shelf in my area with the lid cracked.
AA+

Mexican cube

the ???? (maz for sure. its doing that weird blobby shit, whatever. it will pin like a champ)

this is the shoebox just on the shelf. it was bacterial so i apologize for its appearance.

also they should not have that blue hue. since my methods involve a more 'open air fruiting' approach things can dry out quick if not tended too. again...that weed oil...
fruits in a few days

i havent done straw in ages. but its looking good.
the thing with shoeboxes is the lids are not air tight at all. even snapped in place is enough fae for fruiting. so id just let it do its thing. i usually 'fruit' when the tray looks 60ish% colonized. then i open the lid. pins about a week later.

the harvest from the bacterial shoebox!

...even more mushrooms to follow.
coming up we will see maturing AA+ and mexican cubes. followed by pan cyan and pan cambo shoeboxes.

i personally like to put the shoeboxes inside a standard mono with the lid cracked.

AA+ is indeed sexy.

Know one person did but is yield increasing from the extra room for the canopy?
Ideally I want to just stack shoeboxes and fruit inside
Clearly it will work but how well. And how much do you fill it to allow fruiting in the box
I always use monos but want to see how this compares

I don't put them in monos thou. I either just leave the lids on or dub them.

God they want FAE so bad lol. I love APE pics though. Ever measure your Biological Efficiency?
