Found these guys on a bed of woodchips near a garden in Hercules, CA
What are they? Actives?

Not active. Pretty though. Someone with broader knowledge might be able to tell you what they are but I can difinitively tell you they are not active. You're looking in the right kind of spots though.

If the spore print is bright rusty orange it's in the Gymnopilus sapineus group - but it looks a bit off for that.  And the cap looks viscid.  So the print will probably be a medium chocolate brown and that would make it something around Pholiota spumosa.
