Habitat: found in wood chips at the edge of a park in the North Bay area of California. Was growing in a small patch, some of them very near each other out of mycelium growing on wood chips.
Gills: orange-brown-tan gills
Stem: short stems, maybe half an inch -- white with dark bruising
Cap: Was darker caramel orange-brown before picking. Hours later the color seems to be decreased and more of a pale tan. Damaged parts of the cap are dark and look like they could be blue bruising.
Spore print color: Waiting on spore print
Bruising: It looks like there could be some blue bruising on the white of the stems.

Look like cyans to me. They could've been allowed to grow a bit more but its your first find so....fuck ya! Its a bit difficult to distinguish alleni from cyans in juvenile phase, but my money is on cyans. Keep looking. If you return to known spots every week or so and just pick the adults - cap opened up completely - then your patch can produce throughout season. Season is getting close to the end but with all the rain this one may go on for a few more weeks. I will often cover the babies with leaves after picking adults...that way others are less likely to spot them. When picking, try to minimize trampling the area they are growing as that will damage the mycellia. Hang out on the edge of the patch and reach in to pick. Excited for you. Thats enough for a couple people to trip if eaten fresh. Once dried thats probably one dose.

Awesome! Thank you so much for the advice! Someone else mentioned waiting too, I didn't realize they were immature but will definitely correct that behavior. What signs of maturity should I look for? I am ready to absorb the wisdom of this board.
So they're safe to eat and I'm not going to have the classic slow, painful death due to liver failure?? hahah...

The cap will open up until its flatish or, with cyans, the edges of the cap will actually turn up and get wavy. You dont have to wait that long necessarily but if you had left those that you picked, in 4 days to a week they probably would have doubled in size. But all this stuff will become apparent as you gain more experience and find them in different stages of their life cycle. You've achieved the most critical first step of finding them. Now you can find more and learn more. This site is a great resource. When I found my first cyans it was kind of an accident. It was 1990. My friends and I had been harvesting lots of blue ringers (stuntzi) for a couple years in housing developments east of Seattle. We had those by the garbage bag full but they arent very strong. I had seen pictures of cyanescens in my Audobon field guide to mushrooms and one day we had stopped by my buddies house to pick up his laundry and I was looking around his yard and spotted a mushroom that looked suspiciously interesting. Picked it and compared it to picture in the book and noticed bluing soon thereafter....we ended up finding around 25 or 30 of them scattered around his yard. Wasnt even in wood chips. That night we made some tea by just running apple cider thru a coffee maker with 4 mushrooms per cup. We, of course, had called all our friends and told them we'd found these different mushies. By the time our tea kicked in and we realized how much more strong and awesome they were, we had given the rest away to all our friends...haha. This was in Seattle suburbs. The next yr, I moved up into the city and started going to college and found my next patch in a planter box on my walk to school. Once you know they're there, you'll start to find them everywhere. PM me if you want my tea or chocolate recipe.
