Have you ever been to a chiropractor?

My back has been hurting me lately and people keep telling me to go see a chiro..... Personally, I do not trust them at all. I'm scared they will just fuck me up forever... I prefer massages and acupuncture.
What's you're take on chiropractors? Good experience? Bad experience?

dude, they are fantastic.
best one i ever had was an adjustment, followed by a hot stone massage. if you can find that service in your area, i would highly recommend.

I've never been to a chiropractor but know one person who has. He said it helped, but you have to set up a series of appointments. It's like physical therapy after an injury - you go once a week for 6 weeks or so until they fix it. Or so I've been told (by one person mind you). But he said it was very good.
I used to have periods of severe back, hip, and back of the legs pain for a while. During the housing market crash I lost my job and worked for about a year moving furniture in a city with really old buildings (spiral staircases and box-shaped staircases) and my dumb ass never wore a belt. For a few years after that my back felt like a bendy straw that hadn't been opened yet. It just felt "compressed", like it needed to be stretched out. You know when you open a bendy straw and pull it apart and it goes "tatatatatata"? My back felt like it needed that.
I had looked into those upside down hanging machines, but they were expensive. One day when I was 26 I woke up and my back hurt so bad it took me the better half of an hour to stand up straight. I thought to myself "screw it, I'm too young to have this kind of back pain", so I went up to Dick's and bought a hang upside down machine for $200. It was the best $200 I've ever spent. My back pain has been minimal for the last 7 years, and when it does hurt, it is only a fraction of the pain I used to feel.
I will warn you though - read the manual. The first time I got on it I went straight upside down and within about 1 minute it felt like my head was going to explode. So I read the manual and it said to start slow, at about a 30 degree angle for a few days, then gradually work your way up to full inversion to allow your body to adjust to being upside down. So I did, and within 2 weeks I felt like a new man!
If it hurts real bad and you feel like decompressing the vertebrae would help, I suggest getting a hang upside down machine. They work wonders, and these days I'm sure you could find a used one for much much less than $200. They were still relatively new when I got mine.

I think massages are better if you have consistent pain. I have bad arthritis in the C6 disc in my lower neck so I've done it all. The best thing I have ever done is invest in a really nice ice pack kit. Icing it to reduce swelling really helps a lot. It will surprise you.

I agree both return blood flow to the body but I feel with constant pain the muscles are really what need attention. Sometimes that'll help for a few weeks for me vs a few days with "adjustments"

Went once 5 years ago and definitely wasn't a fan. Got a lot more out of doing daily stretches, exercise and the occasional massage.

Don't be scared. About the worst thing that can happen is breaking your neck lol. No if they didn't help people then they wouldn't go back. Go test it one time. It doesn't hurt only the next day you feel a little sore. I go occasionally for my neck. My neck would feel terrible otherwise. If it doesn't improve then see a Dr. next. You might need xrays, mri to see inside.

I've been to two. One took a very long time with a tool like a giant ball point pen punching up and down my back and elsewhere but she fixed a very stubborn pulled hamstring she that I had been fighting for over a year. She was very conservative and I got the feeling she might have been milking the appointments a little.
The other one took a shot at my lower back and fixed it very quickly with some stretches, very deep tissue, and a drop table which felt scary but seems to work. Two weeks vs sometimes months for a similar injury. He was damn near a miracle worker. So my experience is varied but overall positive.
I'd be very reluctant to let one have a go at my neck based on what I have seen. Looks too scary. Overall I'd say like anything there are good ones and bad ones. Go based on a personal referral.

Agreed. When the muscles get tense they tend to put more pressure on the joints/vertebrae. Whichever route you decide to take, be sure to incorporate some stretching into your daily routine. Each day when I get off of the hang upside down machine (I think they are called "inversion tables") I do some back and leg stretches for a few minutes. Over time it has worked wonders and over the years has made the $200 very very much worth it. Good luck on your journey toward no back pain. It can be a real pain...

Basically, this. I went to one when I was in high school. The chiropractor would give me fancy information, and then give me a few "adjustments" where he'd crack my back in a certain way 1-2 times a week.
Yoga, massage, and relaxation are what helped me, although my back still isn't top-notch. YMMV though because I only have slight scoliosis.

My fiancée goes to one on a regular basis and it makes all the difference in the world for her back issues. If you go to one though, be prepared to become semi-dependent on it. If she misses two weeks, she is a different person.

I got my back fucked up when I was about 13ish (like permanent damage) and my grandma started taking me to one. It works but it's not a permanent solution, or at least wasn't in my case. I had to keep going back for adjustments on a monthly basis. I eventually stopped going and learned to live with the pain. I don't really notice it much anymore unless I bend wrong and pinch a nerve or whatever it is that happens. Then I spend 2 days feeling like I have a knife jabbed in my spine.

I've only been to one once. I had a pinched nerve in my shoulder/neck area. I could barely turn my head sideways and it hurt like a bitch. Still to this day, I ha e no idea how it happened. But after a few days I went to a local chain chiropractor (like a chain store through the city)
I was skeptical, but wow did it work albeit scary. There is something about a person grabbing your head and snapping your neck to the side, popping all your vertebrae that is unnerving.

My dad is a chiro and a radiologist. Growing up playing multiple sports it was great, because if anything hurt he could adjust me that night and it usually helped. I am abbot skeptical about them though. I think they can help with many things, but are not the cure all. And most of the time they won't tell you they can't help, they'll just keep having you come in for the $.
My girlfriend had a lot of lower back pain before I met her, and after my dad adjusting her over several months it got way better. It can also highly depend on the chiro according to my dad, and the education they receive. He is a professor at the main chiropractic and radiology school in the US, but says there are some other not so great schools and certifications you can get to become licensed.
My dad also adjusted my cousins like 7.5 month old baby that was a super premi when it was having a bunch of complications. Ended up fixing a bunch of problems the baby was having, pretty incredible story I guess.

I get a lot of back pain sometimes too, mostly cuz I'm always fucking up when lifting things, I bend my back too much, and I end up using the wrong muscles..
did u by any chance try lifting sumthing heavy recently?.. Or do u sit for long periods of time?..
You may want look into sum basic stretching poses and techniques n stuff, those help a lot.
weed helps a lot too, it keeps my muscles relaxed and my back seems to heal twice as fast..
