First time casing, first fruits are really small...
    #24036309 - 01/24/17 03:10 PM (7 years, 6 days ago)

Hey All - so, first go at casing.  All seemed to be working great, I have a nice scattering of small pins coming up.  One little group of pins started earlier than the others and was growing nicely in a tight bunch.  Looked great last night.

Came in this morning and this little group of fruits all have open caps.  They're only about 1.5 inches (4cm) tall.  Most of the casing pics I've seen, the fruits grown much taller than that.  I was really surprised that they matured so small.

Is this what I should expect from the rest of the pins?  Anything I should do differently to allow these fruits to grow big and strong?

I followed a Tek found on this site that seemed to have good feedback, put 1" of moistened verm in the bottom of the tub, then crumbled a bunch of colonized cakes, then topped it off with about 2" of Jiffy Mix.  Tub is kept between 70-75 degrees, between 85-92% humidity and is lit 12 hours/day with a 6500K CFL.

Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Im not sure why or how to fix but I tend to get small fruits on the first flush (not that small though) and bigger fruits on later flushes.

What do you mean a casing? Like a tray?

Sounds like a Crumble And Case tek to me.

Could be genetics and not your casing.

A pic would help shed some light on this.

Thanks for the replies, All.  I did a little more digging and I think I've found my issue - my casing is too wet.  Apparently, this can stunt growth?  I searched "waterlogged" when I picked the next couple little buggers, since the caps were still closed and when I picked them, water came out of the caps.  Results of the search were informative - much information saying that casing too wet = waterlogged and small fruits.

Gonna stop misting for a couple days, let it dry out a little bit and see what happens... That is, unless some knowledgeable soul here tells me that's an awful idea!

Cheers!

I'm using a basic shotgun chamber...  My concern is that they aren't getting much bigger than what you see before they open up. I'm perfectly happy to wait for them to grow, but they are maturing and opening when only about 1.5" tall.  Apparently, overly damp substrate can cause this (?)...
