The split caps is usually due to low humidity, and isnt an issue, nice find, chew a few for me!

Nothing wrong with any if them, including the "mushy" ones you discarded. Dry 'em out and consume them. Even ones that are totaly black and mush dont hurt you in my experience. As the darken they just lose some potency. Just get under a fan and dry them as quick as possible. Ive harvested over 150 lbs (dried) of cyans in my lifetime and never made a habit of discarding them if they werent pristine. I hear people in this sight being paranoid about this and it baffles me. I have never had problems nor has any of the many people who have enjoyed natures bounty with me.(other than tripping the fuck out from consuming too much) I can see it being gross to eat non-pristine mushies raw and fresh, but if you are gonna dry them out for later consumption, I've never had a problem. Make tea or chocolates for a much more pleasant and effective trip. PM me for instructions. Wish i could justify another trip up to the bay but dont think my GF would go for it.

Its just extra important to get thise ones drying as fast a possible to get that extra moisture out. If you dont dry em fast they will decline quickly, but if you dry em out fast you'll hardly be able to tell the difference

I'm no scientist or doctor. I just have a wealth of personal experience which pre-dates the advent of helpful websites like this one. Drying them kills the creepy crawlies. Making tea probably adds another layer of sterilization as well.

People who buy/sell care about pretty ones. I noticed here in the PNW nobody cares about condition. If anything they wanna know where they were collected lol.
I boil water, add slices of lemon, take those out after a bit and put my mushrooms in and boom, clean. Actives aren't fragile little butterflies like a lot of people make them out to be.
The really old rotted matures can give you food poisoning though, just like any other food. So prepare or store as necessary.
If you have woody soil on your property you can always slurry them up (very rich fungal sugars), use stem butts and bury sheets of cardboard, move them to chips or all sorts of things if you don't like the big black ones. Most of the time they're not even rotten, just heavily sporulated.
