These are 5lb blocks 80/20 csh/bran.
about 1.25-1.5 lbs per block.

Dude! those are hawt! Try colonizing them in the dark, if you can. I've heard brown oysters get triggered to pin by light. Might help.

Yes they work much better through black plastic. same with pinks.

The brown oysters to the left are the same culture as the one I previously posted.

The only thing keeping me from using black bags is unseen contaminates. How do you know if a bag is bad?

It's still very easy to pick out contams even with black bags. When you walk into a room full of healthy myc you feel and smell it. Daily inspections and sniffs and keep a 'window' bag that is clear. It gives you a little insight into how the batch as a whole is doing.

I joined a short 2 hour course on how to cultivate Oyster mushroom in coffee grounds. Only old ladies attending, and me :P

Mixed oyster mushroom spawn, coffee grounds, gypsum, cardboard and water. This is after 4 days. Looks bad on the bottom.

Looks like a nice cheap and rich substrate,

In my opinion you're better off treating coffee grounds as a supplement instead of making it the bulk of your substrate.
Oysters should indeed have no problems with colonizing it but in my experience the grounds do not retain enough water.

Indeed, could not agree more, its 2-3% nitrates, a bit rich, plus the lower pH.

this article from oregen state U puts coffee grounds at 2% nitrate by volume. saw another article that said 2.28% and the rest being organic matter. pH 6.5-6.8. I wonder if the caffeine has an inhibitory effect after a certain concentration

what do people around here supplement coffee grounds at in sawdust / straw grows?

I have not really noticed an inhibitory effect, but the fact that it just doesn't retain enough water. I only did it once though, for shits and giggles at work where I chucked the used coffee pads in a box each day. when it was full, I fruited it and I got one giant mushroom.

It branched, you should have cloned that at the "v" point.

yes its your culture, will it be ok to clone? tempted to start from spores to see the difference in growth.

Not sure how much to prune from this log - any suggestions?

I would clone that if you can, It was a strong isolate I grew out. You can take spores and make your own isolate though.
My grows are horizontal, like your jar, but with casing, so I can pluck and patch or cut and patch the casing.

Try growing Kings from trays, or cakes-blocks, using a top fruiting or open fruiting method.

To clone the genetics, and try to get branching oysters.
