Making The Move From Cakes to Monos!
    #24032380 - 01/23/17 01:39 AM (7 years, 7 days ago)

So, the time has come. I have studied, read, and written out several bulk teks trying to get a sense of how it works.

After several months of study and sporadic commenting I decided to make up some agar and jump in. After a few transfers I did several jars of agar to grain (GT, Corumba Brazil, and Escondido). I did G2G expansion at a 1:3 ratio, then I did some LI from a Brazilian plate.

Anyhow, I digress, I spawned my first momotubs today. I decided to start out with smaller tubs to reduce the Amount of spawn at risk. I spawned two 27qts, at about 2.5 inches deep, one Brazilian and one GT.

I used WBS for my grain, using the simmer/soak Tek w/gypsum. I decided to use Spitball's Monotub liner Tek, soaked the colonized grain for 15 minutes before spawning to Daimon's 50/50 Tek.

I followed all teks to the letter, and am hoping when I open them up they will be nice and happy!

I have a little coir/verm left and was wondering if I could use it to case a finished bottle of WBS? I thought it would take more than it did for the tubs. I want use it if I can and am interested in trying a few new methods.

In the mean time I have birthed a Brazilian cake, and a GT cake and have them in a shoebox dubtub SGfC that I have had success with. They were birthed two days ago and already have mushies showing up.

I am having a hard time keeping humidity right though. I moved to a significantly drier climate and have to adjust a little. The cakes are bluing which I have associated with drying out imhe. Any advice from anyone with experience dealing with a super low humidity environment?

You may add more soaked perlite if thats what you using. Like make a thicker layer. Aditionaly, you may check if the breathing holes are not too manny or to big and correct that, closing a fill. This will also decrease evaporation.

Manny times people underestimate the amount of air that can pass through 4 or 5 3 mm holes...as long as you fan some times it should be enough.

Thanks for the reply. The box is my first attempt at a SGFC, I made it a year ago while living in a tropical forest. Now I live in a h high plains desert, so perhaps my original design needs tweaking. I have two more cakes birthing in 3 days, and two dozen a week later.

Perhaps I should have mentioned that I used a little micropore to restrict some holes already when I noticed it drying quickly. My old method used an automated chamber which is a pain in the dick to make, so I am trying to use the newer teks.

In the mean time I will add an inch of perlite to check if that will help some. I currently have about 2.5 inches which was plenty in the humid environment i moved from, so maybe that will help.

Do you have any experience with bottle Tek? Can I just dunk and case WBS in the jar? Just curious there.

Thank you again.

*UPDATE*

OK, the thing is janky as hell looking, but it is starting to build up some humidity inside, and getting the little dry ring I am used to seeing when these things run right. Maybe the addition of the Escondido cake, the broken one, added to the air flow dynamic.... Either way, they are growing.

Nice little cluster.

Randomness

I'm out of perlite and my fuel pump went out, so I was unable to add more. I am making a 55 qt I had laying around into a SGFC tonight, and grabbing a sack tomorrow.

For now I think I have it dialed in! The change in climate has an amazing effect!

I made two 55qt Monos the last night the same way as the minis, this time one used 6qts of Corumba, and the other with 4qts of GT at a sub death of 2.5 inches. I am thinking I should case them since it is so dry here. Unfortunately I failed to take any pictures before I bagged them.

I can't wait to see Monos in action. I am nervous as hell about it, but I am pretty sure I have the concept down.

*UPDATE*

So, I got my dub tuned in and am quite pleased with what I am seeing. My GT is pushing out a pretty monster, and the Escondido is pinned up.

My 27qt Monos will be checked on the first and the 55s on the second. These cakes are keeping me busy so I don't touch those. I want to peak so bad right now.... If I didn't have the cakes it would be impossible to resist.

Anywho, I will be cloning these, so I will update when I do that. My 55qt SGFC is almost done and I will be birthing two more jars tonight, and have four going into consolidation today. There's another half dozen that should be consolidating in 3-5 days, so plenty to keep me distracted.

What do you think of these?

Thanks bro! I have done cake for Over a decade and these are the best results I have ever gotten. I am really happy. I tried to break into the hobby after an extended hiatus last year, but had the Jakes come by to check my plant count and freaked out. I just started back about a month ago, changed a few things up and it seems to be working!

UPDATE

OK. I couldn't help but peak! It has been 7 days and I looked at one of my 27qts. I have no experience with Monos at all, but it looks good by what I have seen examples of. Can someone give me advice as to moving on from this point?

I am thinking I should leave it the full ten days, then I am planning on using Pasty's Micropore Tek to dial them in. Any suggestions, comments, criticism would be appreciated.

My cluster off the GT cake gave 9 grams dried. I am about to go on a journey shortly after I pick this cluster off an Escondido. The views are tearing. How much longer do you think I should give them? I don't want a mess in my tub! Lol.

I birthed another Escondido and another GT today. They are in the dunk as we speak! Just a question, would adding calcium sulfate to the dunk water help at all?

Be easy, mi amigos! Esta una dia muy bonita.

*UPDATE*

Been a little while since I updated this. I have continued to have pretty nice flushes on my cakes. My 6qt dubtub SGFCs are out producing my 55qt reliably. Here is my most recent flush.

My 27qt mono is pinning! Took longer than I thought, but it's nice to see it happening. Does this thing look alright? I have never done bulk, so I am not sure. Any comments, advice, or criticism would be appreciated!

Thanks bro. I appreciate the input.

UPDATE

So, my first mono is flushing. It pinned very uneven, one side took off and now the other side is starting to. Wierd. I am currently harvesting fruits as they mature. I will post the result when it's over.

In the mean time, cakes are doing well. This is the third flush on an Escondido... Lol.
