First time grower needing a few bits of advice
    #24032253 - 01/23/17 12:08 AM (7 years, 7 days ago)

Just started my first grow after doing research for about a month.

Decided to start with 6. Prepared jars and PCed them on Jan 14 and then inoculated them the next morning Jan 15 and put them into a box.

It has been exactly one week (now Jan 22) and they seem to doing great and don't see any contaminates yet.. I didn't exactly measure the amount of spores I was using in each jar. Some are about 1ml while there is one that has about 3-1/2ml which I feel is definitely going to be ready before the others. Here is how most of my cakes look.

While the one with more in it has almost completed a full band around the jar (about 2mm away)

I have a small heater in the closet that I set to 75 and it keeps the temp in the box at 77°f round the clock.
I have an Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier and a 66qt sterilite tub that I want to use for my fruiting chamber and have been looking up many different methods but there are so many different types of ways to do it and so much information that contradicts each other I'm just not sure. The Humidifier is a pretty decent one with both humidity and mist controls.

I have seen a tech where they use 1-1/2in PVC with holes drilled in both sides that runs all the way through the tub and has a cap on one end and other end is connected to the Humidifier. The opening in the Humidifier is exactly 2-1/2in wide and I cannot find any reducing couplers that are in that size only 2in or 3in to 1-1/2in so I dont know what to do about that. Thinking maybe get the 2in and filling in around coupler with silicone sealant but maybe someone on here has a better method.

This is the method I was thinking of going with but not quite sure I've heard a lot of information from a lot of sources and the humidity is always horibly low where I live. Some people say to not use Humidifier to just use the SGFC but I think with our low humidity that i would constantly be adding more water. Heard others say to use both the Humidifier and perlite and others just said Humidifier only. Also I'm still not quite sure about dunking and/ or casing.

Hope someone on here can help me with a few pieces of advice and give me any thoughts on my first grow and let me know what you think. Thanks alot, this site has been a great deal of help and has got me started on a very fun and rewarding project.

First of all, since it's your first grow I strongly suggest sticking to the basics, and doing it by the book. You will make mistakes and it will be much easier to learn from them if things arent overly complicated. Secondly, I believe your areas humidity doesn't matter much as long as the fruiting chamber has good temperature, as in, not too cold - not too hot. The perlite method is pretty much bread and butter imo. People usually add humidifiers for gas exchange to eliminate the need for fanning. But even then there is the legendary poor man's pod
https://www.shroomery.org/9047/Poor-Mans-Pod
Which does the job just as good if not better imo :stoned:

Just run the humidifier away from the SGFC if it's that dry. Please don't build some "automated" contraption.

Yup, proper holes and proper amount of perlite will be better than a humidifier. 4" of perlite will give you high humidity, the proper sized and spaced holes will give you the best FAE.

No space aged auto-chamber will take the world by storm, this has been going on for a long time and the best design is still the SGFC.

Both my humidifiers, my vaporizers and computer fans are in the closet. Once I built a proper SG and saw the results, I built 3 more.

Thanks for the tips and advice. The cakes are coming along fine and one of the cakes exploded with growth overnight and is now completely colonized while the other 5 have about a dime to a quarter sized spot on the bottom of them that is still uncolonized and hasn't seemed to grow any in a few days. I'm thinking they may be packed to tight because all I could find was fine grade verm in my area so thinking of flipping them but have heard both good and bad about it so not sure if I should or not.

I wouldn't flip the cakes as the dry verm layer that used to keep contaminants out would be useless. Do you have lids with holes on the jars and their covered with foil. if so and you do have the dry verm layer remove the foil.

Yes I have the dry verm with the holes in the lids. Just removed the foil and will wait to see how it goes. Hopefully within next couple of days can pull out of box and start consolidation on the shelf

Ya man, you can remove the foil after inoculation so that may be enough to increase the GE and let them catch up. I had a few that had no foil and lagged so I flipped them and it worked.

If they are colonized except for that small patch I think the myc will prevail before any contaminants can reach it either way.

I got mine almost brand new at the goodwill a few years ago for like 3 bucks and it has been wonderful for my allergies in the fall and winter. Also what's wrong with my bday.lmfao.

I pulled the foil and removed the cakes from my box and have them sitting on the shelf now and have already seen growth speed back up again after only 13 hours so I guess the foil was the issue. Thanks alot everyone. I'll keep y'all updated with any new results or issues. So far everyone has been helping ease my mind and feel alot better about having a successful first harvest.

I went ahead and went with 4in of perlite method I stead of messing with the humidifier. Just been running the humidifier in the room because average humidity is less than 20% in here and it's keeping the humidity at about 75 in the fruiting chamber and can't get it to go any higher.

Birthed the cakes last night and all 6 of them were good and colonized and 3 had a few little tiny baby shrooms growing on the already. I dont really eat shrooms unless there magic so had my buddy come in who loves mushrooms and he said they smelled awesome. Birthed them, rinsed then dunked them over night, and then rinsed again and put in fruiting chamber. So far everything is growing great just need to figure out how to keep humidity up. Maybe need to find a better way to seal container. I have a few holes in it with polyfil stuffed N them but the lid is very loose. Anyone know if I can use weather stripping on the top of the tub to help with the seal?

Thanks alot everyone. Hopefully not to long from now now my bro and his wife can have a good night. We've only done shrooms about 3 times a piece because we can only find them N my area every couple of years.

So far everything seems like it's going great. I still can't get the humidity above 89 and most the time it's between 86 and 88. All but 1 of my cakes are fruiting. The one has just barely stated a pin a d the rest all have clusters of fruit.

Hopefully the bald one starts fruiting soon.  There are a few that look like they will be ready by the morning. I don't know what's up with that one cake. I have e checked it out and it's clean, smells good, has a small spot of piss but just won't fruit.

Hi everyone. A friend of mine is new at this and is having troubles figuring out how to make a post. He is having issues with the fruits and is looking for some guidance. Pics are available if someone can help

Your fruiting chamber has to have 1/4 inch holes two inches apart on all six walls

Yes you need holes in your chamber to allow for air to get at the perilite and you should trim that foil at the bottom of the cakes, water will collect there and cause issues. You need holes were the perilite is to ,I know it seems strange but air must be able to pass through the perilite to cause evaporation to add moisture to the inside of chamber

Hi there,

I've been trying to figure out how to post to ask a question so please forgive me if this is the wrong way to go about it as i haven't been able to figure out another way.

I am trying to diagnose this or these contaminants. What is wrong with these?

This is what a health or healthier fruit of this strain should look like i believe.

Please, any input would be appreciated as i have not managed to find anything similar to this in the archives.

I added more holes and got a small flush of about 3 to 4 large shrooms from each cake and a few small aborts. I have them sitting out drying and redunked the cakes again. Wet weight was right about 62g. I still haven't got the humidity to go above 89 even with the addition of holes but they did start growing quicker and more evenly afterwords. I noticed when I pulled the cakes to harvest that the bottom edge of a couple of my cakes were dry and hard.
