Something to think about
    #2403041 - 03/04/04 02:14 PM (20 years, 1 month ago)

Something I got from Class Today at uni

Quote:

THE EARTHS POPULATION

Some things to consider as the world continues to over populate itself.
If we could shrink the earth's population to a village of precisely 100 people,
with all the existing human ratios remaining the same, it would look something like the following:

There would be:

57 Asians
21 Europeans
14 from the Western Hemisphere, both north and south
8 Africans

52 would be female 48 would be male
70 would be non-white 30 would be white
70 would be non-Christian
30 would be Christian
89 would be heterosexual
11 would be homosexual
6 people would possess 59% of the entire world's wealth and all
6 would be from the United States.
80 would live in substandard housing
70 would be unable to read
50 would suffer from malnutrition
1 would be near death;
1 would be near birth 1 (yes, only 1) would have a college education
1 would own a computer

When one considers our world from such a compressed perspective, the need for acceptance, understanding and education becomes glaringly apparent. The following is also something to ponder... If you woke up this morning with more health than illness...you are more blessed than the million who will not survive this week. If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation ...you are ahead of 500 million people in the world. If you can attend a church meeting without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death...you are more blessed than three billion people in the world. If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep...you are richer than 70% of this world. If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace ... you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy. If your parents are still alive and still married ... you are very rare, even in the United States and Canada. If you can read this message, you just received a double blessing in that someone was thinking of you, and furthermore, you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world that cannot read at all.

So no matter what happens in your life I dont think any of you have anything to complain about. You could easily be way worse off just think your self lucky.

Hmmm. The whole '10% of the population is gay' thing. Or is it 11% now? So does that mean that 11% are more gay than straight or that 11% are born gay and it's just that cut and dry?
I liked this comedian's bit I saw recently. He was telling his homophobic buddy that everyone is a little gay. His buddy said "Not me! I ain't gay at all!" So the comedian asks him if he likes porn and he says "Of course, you know I do." So his friend asks him if he only ever watches girl on girl porn and he answers that no, he also likes to watch a woman and a man make love. So the comedian asks him, "So do you like it when the guys cock is small and flacid?" and his friend replies "Hell no! I like it when the cock is big, hard and throbbing!", and then looks down sheepishly.

Very true. But the detriments of living in western society in many ways balance the suffering of a third world existence. You are right, we should all be very grateful, but we should also realize that people in other parts of the world enjoy benefits in different ways. Everything is relative and ultimately balanced. We all suffer, just differently.

I don't believe some of this. Especially 80 housing, 70 reading 50 hungry 1 college and 1 computer. There's what 6 billion people and 1% of that is 60 million. That's less than 25% of the population of this country. A significant portion of this country's population has a college degree. Of adults, I would guess (fair enough I'm guessing) that it's in the 20% range. At least. Something's not right.

Also, last sentence said that 2 billion can't read but the stat numbers say 70% (over 4 billion) can't read.

I have no problem with shocking youngsters into realizing how fortunate they are but bullshit is bullshit.

well strangly enough the lecture was on health and disease not sure why they included this though.

Anyway I did find the original source for the lectures material here it is so I dont realy think it is made up.

http://www.hfe.org/_old/resource/articles/earth100.htm

But if you did a search on something like The Earth as just
100 people you could probably find more info.
