Ya dude water helps the alcohol cross the cell membrane and then alcohol coagulates the cell. But 91% alcohol has PLENTY of water to allow osmosis to occur, the issue is that 91% evaporates too fast for it to allow speedy osmosis, so all the alcohol evaporates before all the cells are killed by it.

I've just managed to get my first successful LC going. Quite nice. Might post some pics as soon as it's visible in the photo.
Do you think that putting woodlover LCs directly on wood is useless?

Yes, quite. Liloldme had a thread about his grow and he sprayed LC on woodchips but nothing happened. Use it to make grain spawn.

Wrong
It you're going to repeat bad info at back it up with sources next time. So we can see who you're repeating from.

RogerRabbit said: It has nothing to do with how fast the alcohol evaporates.
It has to do with pure alcohol not being admitted inside the cell walls by osmosis. If water is mixed with the alcohol, it tricks the cell wall into admitting it, therefore killing the cell. 70% has been shown to be a good mixture for sanitizing, and superior to higher concentrations. RR
Search my posts too I've posted links to the science behind it more times than i can count
There's some contaminants that are more easily killed by 50% for this reason.
You can submerge bacteria in alcohol so evaporation doesn't matter and 70% does a far superior Job to 91% at killing.

Dude bodhi rr specifically says the inability of PURE alcohol to penetrate via osmosis....
91% is by no means pure. This is info i have learned not just through this hobby but in school as well. 91% has plenty of water for osmosis but evaps too fast for effectiveness. Pure alcohol will not penetrate via osmosis at all

Yes I know this and 91 doesn't penetrate nearly as well as 50-70
Some cells are killed more easily by 50 than 70 For this very reason.
It has nothing to do with evaporation, look it up rather than beating yourself into looking worse
Performance of sanitizing drops off above 70 and has nothing to do with evaporation
Most of these tests are done on petri dishes where evaporation doesn't conflict with the results as its not allowed to evaporate off dry.
The osmotic pressure of 70% is more ideal 91% coagulated proteins near the surface it disabled bacteria but that bacteria could re-able itself in more suitable conditions
70% doesn't just coagulate the outside of cells it is allowed in and kills cells rather than disable them by "puckering" them up.

Haha
I guess my biology professor is a dunce.
Article written by stanford chem professor:
https://www.quora.com/When-is-70-isopropyl-rubbing-alcohol-better-than-91
From the article: "The 70% formulation, by evaporating more slowly, may also actually assist in its disinfectant role, although this comment is not coming from the provided CDC document links but is instead deduced from them. The slower evaporation rate means that, in some settings, exposure to the alcohol will be for a longer period of time. Length of exposure is a key factor in determining the effectiveness of a disinfectant, as the CDC documents do repeatedly reference."
I could find more examples and what not but i don't really care that much nor am i disagreeing with you. I am simply saying that evap does play a role in effectiveness

Evaporation certainty helps it's not the reason it works better though. 70 works at a fundamental level differently than 90+% College professors have been known to be dumbasses...
Higher alcohol concentrations, like 91%-99%, coagulates protein on contact, creating a "shell" around the entire bacterial organism. After that shell is made, the alcohol CANNOT go through that shell to further coagulate the rest of the bacterial organism and its organelles. This will render the bacteria, not dead, but inactive. If given favorable conditions, it can start to function once more. Now if you use 70% alcohol (which has the highest osmotic pressure of alcohol/water mixtures), it will coagulate the protein but it will do so at a much slower rate, giving it the opportunity to penetrate fully. Since it does this slowly, nothing can coagulate in time to stop it which ends up leaving the bacterial organism dead.

Lol I've only been saying in my last five posts that evaporation is a secondary benefit. It's by no means the reason why it works better for though. 70 is still better than 91 even if you don't allow either of them to evaporate
Your professor made a hypothesis. In that the evaporation difference MAY also help play a role, he DEDUCED that from common sense. Doesn't change the fact that 70% has physical characteristics that make it more effective not related to its evaporation

I don't care if someone is going to roll eyes and get butthurt the real answer is getting posted. No reason for fake information. Its not a fight except for the one person that doesn't like to hear things that challenge their opinions. For me it's just posting the truth for everyone else. So we don't have a bunch of noobs thinking 91 works well but it evaporates too quick. It doesn't work as well and it evaporates too quick. evaporation aside 91 doesn't work as well regardless
May as well say no fact posting because it will start an argument with people that defend the status quo

I'm with Bodhisatta here. These issues need to be resolved and quickly. Imagine this was a forum about drug use. Imagine someone giving a potentially lethal advice, because they don't know the drug's pharmacology or something related.
It's not like anyone is gonna die from killing bacteria with different alcohol percentage, but it's good to put things on track when someone's saying nonsense.

I had no idea that 90 % was less desirable than 70%. I will be going to the store soon lol.
I agree thanks Bod!!!!!

I'm all kinds of into accurate information. It's hard enough to get into this hobby as it is, wading through tit-deep misinformation doesn't help at all.
I'm making my plates today and was going to use 99%. This stopped me just in time. (still flame sterilizing, was using it to wipe lids before opening)
Thanks Bodhi.

I never said evaporation was the reason that 70 works better. I was just debating your statement that evaporation has nothing to do with it because it does
I'm definitely not butthurt over it
