Peracetic Acid

Not sure if any of you guys have heard of this solution (Peracetic Acid) before. Those who are involved in brewing probably have. PA is a liquid sterilant. It is known to kill spores, bacteria and some virus's. I use it on most of my stainless steel tools, plastic lab counter tops and on glass. I also use it to clean my small indoor green houses and their FAE / Humidity equipment. How ever it is pretty rough on metals like steel and aluminum. It can be used on Stainless steel though. Plus the odor isn't too great either. Much better than using lysol or bleach to clean things. It is way more effective.
I usually keep a gallon on hand from here: Compliance PA
You can also find it in powder form from other places as well. It isn't cheap though.
So while going through my notes from the days of plant tissue culture I came across a recipe I used to make my own PA if I didn't have any on hand. So I wanted to share this with the shroomery community for people who might be interested in giving it a try.
This is recipe is for making 1 gallon:
- 1261 ml of 3% hydrogen peroxide - 2522 ml of 5% Acetic Acid aka store bought white vinegar
To dilute 29% hydroponics grade hydrogen peroxide down to the 3% needed in the recipe.
- 130.45 ml 29% Hydrogen Peroxide - 1120.55 ml of distilled water
Set the mixture in a dark closet for a week or two then use test strips to test the concentration. The longer the solution sits the stronger it gets. Usually around a week or so is long enough to be used to clean things in your lab.
Do not use on mycelium. It will aggressively attack anything organic.
Also don't forget to wear gloves when handling high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide. The stuff can burn your skin.

It's great for gassing the grow room from eat I hear. I've also heard good things about chlorine oxide gas, but that's a two part solution.

I used to use a homemade paracetic acid solution to sanitize equipment on the farm to reduce the spread of blight. stuff works very well. I believe they sell it commercially as Sanidate With various concentrations depending on which one you buy.
