Is This Mycellium? Importance of Rhizomorphic Growth Before Agar to Grain Transfer? Virgin Grower
    #24027321 - 01/21/17 03:26 AM (7 years, 9 days ago)

Hi all!

Just looking for some friendly validation that this is mycellium growing in my pasty plates?

Photos:

I haven't grown mushrooms successfully yet so I really don't know for certain. There's the hallmark white fuzz, but nothing resembling rhizomorphic growth in sight.

The two plates I photographed are the two slightly less promising of the four plates I had turn out like this. I sacrificially chose to photo these two because of likely contamination risk from holding a camera over an open plate.

I've done one transfer now at this point (from the two better plates), and again there doesn't seem to be any rhizomorphic growth or sectoring.

How necessary is it to keep transferring agar work until I see rhizomorphic growth before I transfer to grains?

Recently, I saw an insightful and thoughtfully written post recommending you actually let your mycellium sit in your agar dish for months until it actually fruits -- then cloning the mini-fruit to a new agar dish -- all before transferring to grains.

A link:

I understand that this is probably the most fool-proof way of making sure you have a fruiting strain before transferring to grains.

I'm curious though, how rare or common of an experience it is to do agar work and transfer to grains only for things not to fruit -- just because of the strain itself?

Just weighing how necessary it is to do this advised step of waiting to your plate fruits?

I'm leaning on kind of doing both; letting some plates sit until they potentially fruit, and also in the mean time do a more conventional transfer of agar to grains.

Thank you very much in advance!

the pics u linked to (and chose not to upload to the site for easier viewing) look like spore germination plates to me, so tough to say what kind of regularity you might see.

I don't grow cubes as much as others, but I'd say that chance is pretty slim unless you are isolating all the way to single sector from spores, but even then, my guess is you would have a bunch of poor performers, not necessarily non fruiters, but IDK.

letting ur plates pins is fine, but the plate should still be clean growth.

don't worry so much about what "kind" of mycelium you have right now.  first and foremost, make sure ur sterile technique is good (no satellite colonies of mold on plates edge from sloppy transfers), then when ur plates are grown to quarter+ size, post another picture of them so someone can tell you if they are clean or maybe need another transfer before going to grains or sitting on shelf to pin

Blindingleaf, thank you sincerely for graciously lending your trusted cultivator feedback.

Given your reply, I went ahead and have now uploaded the photos to the site and have edited the original post so that the photos are now displayed in the post (as oppose to just hot links.)

Hopefully,( maybe??) that will get another voice to weigh-in?

Unfortunately, I don't know how to take sharper photos for something close-up and small like a pasty plate's innards with the camera I have.

It is pretty fuzzy and indistinct like is pictured though.

Best Regards
Enjoy your Sunday

Thank you Bodhisatta, for the bit of validation and the work you've done in assembling a compilation of valuable links.
