Trees in Winter Early and Spring
    #2400025 - 03/03/04 07:06 PM (20 years, 29 days ago)

As stated before, I've got morel fever really bad this spring. I've been brushing up on identifying trees in early spring. Here are two really good links I found:

Thanks, I'll be checking out the white pines this year. It feel like its going to be a good year for morels, because I just added another tree to look under and there's a nice stand of white pines waiting for me.

Oh man, I hear you about the fever, I actually dreamt of picking morels last night , I know, I'm pathetic  .  We've got a few weeks to wait yet up here.

Morel season will not actually be hitting my locale until May! I've got spring break at the end of March. While my coeds spend it in Cancun, etc, I'll be in the woods with the trees and the mushrooms. =)

I don't really think there is anything more important than trees when it comes to morels. I also think it is a lot easier to put yourself in the habitat of the trees you want to find, versus to guess the habitat of the morel. We really do not know if enough to say the habitat of the morel without saying near dead elm, ash, aspen, etc. If you read look near such and such a tree, look up that tree for its habitat! It is very likely that it is easy to decifer. Then when you find your search area, you'll be very happy but not all too surprised when you walk into a stand of dead elms.

Unforatunately I am going to a place entirely unfamiliar. I've never even been to shawnee. And because of school, I cannot go scout.
But I've got printed out two 1:3.6mi scale map of the entire shawnee forest; one is shaded relief with streams and waterbodies and the other is land cover. The land cover map shows me what type of vegetation or lack there of is covering the land. What if I focus my efforts in a place with many southfacing slopes in a mostly decidious forest? I think I'll have a good starting point.

And, I've got a GPS on the way from eBay. I'll be tracking all of my new finds. =)

A GPS for mushroom hunting seems to be a good idea to me. You could create kind of "musrhoom maps" every year and see how the various species spread or vanish.
Which brand of GPS have you bought at eBay ?
