Humidity and light question
    #2402498 - 03/04/04 01:58 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

there is some stuff that i don't understand ... Ill make some birdseed cakes ... When they are pressure cooked i will wrap them in aluminium foil to avoid light to get to the mycelium , ill let hole(s) on the lid under the filter open ( not wraped ) for air exchange ... Then ill turn my infra red heating sistem to get a temperature of 25-27 C degrees . So is this ok ??? Now the question , what about humidity ??? Do i need to worry about humidity or is the water in the jars enough for mycelium to colonize 100% of the BS ? I don't use terrarium for this ...

Second thing - What about casing ? I will case the birdseed cakes later ( colonized straw + peat method ) ... Then ill give them a fine spray with H2O and a bit H2O2 ... Then i was thinking to put the stuff in a improvised terrarium ... I was thinking to put sawdust on the bottom and add water , then i would put the casing on that and close the terrarium ... I would fan it every day and i would use infra red heating system again to have a good temperature ... Is this ok ???

Tell me al my mistakes before i try anything ... Thanx

25 to 27 is ok, 27 to 30 is better.
No need to worry about humiderty yet, as
if you prepeared the grains correctly, then
there is the correct amount of moisture present
for them to full colonise the seeds.

Yes, mix them into the straw when they are ready,
then place it into a clean bag sealed with an elastic band,
and place back into the incubator for 5 to 10 days, or
untill all the straw is white.

Then take out the bag, and move to the fruiting chamber,
were you want the the temp to be about 23?c

Saw dust is a bad idea imho, as its prone to contaminate,
what you want is something with out nutrients, gravel, geolite,
perlite, or somthing simular is much preffered to saw dust.

well the idea is to have something that soakes water and later evaporates and makes good humidity ? So normal cotton could do the thing , or anything that soaks water ... Am i wrong ?

Yeah your right there. but you also want something that
bacteria doesnt love, towels are cotton, cotton gets
smelly when old and wet. Inert is the key. Nutrient free
inert, large surfaced area'd substance.

Gravel has worked for me, everyone can find gravel.
You can boil it as long as you like to sterilise it.
Wash is ext.

but perlite is superior, because it has a larger surface area, syrface area = evapouration = humiderty.

Avoid anything that can rot.

It hold's water and is inert ...

if you mean kitty litter thats clay.If you put that in the bottom and add water you will have a horrible nasty mess.just get some perlite at walmart or if all else fails buy a couple terra cotta pots(under $2 at walmart)and smash them up into small pieces and use them,or just get some gravel like loki suggested, for that matter you could probably use aquaruim gravel if you aklso used a pump, but im not sure.

Well , i don't know , but here kitty litter is not clay ... Its some crunched balls ... They look like styrofoam but they soak water ... Ill just go buy a bag of that and test the performances ... I can't get perlite , not til tommorow , so are there any other alternatives ?

A frined of mine uses aquarium heater in a can filled with water , closed in his incubator with the casing .... That's how he keeps the humidity stable ... Is this a ok method ?

I saw a aquarium 25W heater for 12$ , but i didn't want to buy it before i get some advice ... So what do you think about that ?
