Pasteurization question

Ok so quick question on pasteurizing. I just did my first round of horse dung, 8 quart jars. I put a digital cooking thermometer into the center of one jar to monitor temp (as seen in RRs Lets Grow Mushrooms videos) and turned on the heat, when the temp showed above 140 I turned off the heat and continued to monitor. My temp continued to climb to 180 in the jar. The video indicated a temp range of 140-160 for 1 hour. So, my internal temp in the jar was above 140 for an hour, but I went well above the high range the video showed. I'm worried I killed off the beneficial bacteria that the process is supposed to preserve. Thoughts?

Don't use that. You need to shut heat off when temperature reaches 104 degrees and it will rise to 140-145 within 10-15 minutes. I then put lid on and keep between 140-145 for two hours. I usually have to turn heat on low couple times for few minutes throughout. It takes some practice.

Ahh crap I was afraid of that. So did I sterilize it? Bummer I wasted 8 quart jars of compost mix. May have to get more horse poop and verm in order to get this done and my grain is prettty much ready to go.

Ok cool thanks Trolleater! It never went above 180 and I definitely had it above 140 for a good 60 min. I'll give it a shot and let you know how it turns out.

180 Pushes it but if it was just quickly dont worry about it..on tje other hand if ya have lots of manure try again..once you figure it out you'll be able to toss the thermometer

Well it was probably about 5 minutes or so at 180 to 181' that's where it peaked and then began to drop back. When I pulled it out at 60 min the temp was reading 147. I do have enough poo for one more round. Obviously I need to shut the heat off about 115-120, not 140. I may do ahead and cook another round.....

Try turning off heat at 104, works like a charm. 15 minutes later it will hit 145. Good luck

Like cron said, it takes a bit more to kill the "money-shot" goodies in your poo. Wow, I should be in porn....

Hah! Yeah I thought about just running with it but this is going to be my last grow till probably April and I'm just getting started on a flow hood so nowhere to work with sterilized poo so I'm cooking a new batch this morning. I had a lot of un planned distractions going on last time. I don't want to blow up this batch with contams. So here we go new jars heating up now. Going to shut off the heat at 105 and then monitor closely.

UPDATE - so by my 3rd round definitely have the pasuerization process dialed in a whole lot better. On my 2nd round it still got up to 171 but only briefly. By the 3rd round I figured out to shut the heat off as soon as I saw steam rising from the pot, not at a specific temp. Then little bumps of heat. Got my internal temps to 153 and held steady between 150-153 for a good hour. Like everyone said just takes some practice. Thanks for all the advice!
