hepa filter question

Are all hepa filters the same? Are there different grades for mycology as I know some vacuum cleaners use hepa filters but noone makes a flow hood using vacuum filters (or do they? Ive no idea). Im looking at building a flow hood and im building my shopping list. I just want one because they are cool.

A vacuum cleaner filter filtered flow hood would be cool if the hepa filters are usable. Super cheap knock a few up to little blowers real cheap but I doubt they are the same or someone else would have thought of it.

Dont use a vaccuum HEPA, it wont give you the working soace or the laminar flow required. I just ordered mine this morning and made an offer on a Camfil 3'x2' LF panel. I keep reading you want something about 4-6" thick to create laminar flow and 99.97 @ 0.3 micron or better. This is the panel I ordered just now, specifically made for laminar flow and the seller generously accepted my offer so i got it within my price range. http://www.ebay.com/itm/262338700741

Yes there's all different kinds of HEPA filters. 99.97. @ 0.3microns
They go all the way to 99.9995% at 0.3
Good for mycology is 99.99
Also we want laminar flow along with the filtered air

Been doing so much research on the subject myself it is nice to be able to share it. Also make sure your fan has enough CFM to handle the surface area of your panel, i have read a little more than 100cfm per sq ft is about right, ideally you want it to bend a flame but not blow it out

Quote:
A 99.97% efficiency filter is tested with a gross leak measurement indicating that 0.03% of all upstream contamination may be passed through the filter. For a 99.99% filter, the test measures each small area so that no more than .01% of upstream contaminant may be passed in a individual leak. Since most of the filter does not have a leakage rate anywhere near the .01% limit, the result is that the gross leak is far less than 0.01%. Thus, a scanned 99.99% filter is far more than 3 times better than the gross leak tested 99.97% filter, generally on the order of from 1000 to 10,000 times better!.

Glad the one i got is 99.9995%, almost settled on a 99.97 for a few bucks cheaper but it was also way too thick (11.5")

I'm just getting started on a flow hood build also. After a LOT of searching, I found a filter on Filters America.com for $80.00 that is a true HEPA filter @ 4.25" thick. I called them to make sure it was because so many searches for "hepa" filters turned up MERV 11 or 13 ratings which is nowhere close. Im pairing that up with a squirrel cage blower that moves 549 CFM which according to the spec sheet should push the pressure I need. My filter size is 15.75 x 18.625. Good luck to you on your build, hope mine works also!
