I've been using Arch Linux the past 3 years, Debian for roughly 5 years before that and Ubuntu/Mint based distros for 2 years prior.

Well, it's running the kernel anyway, but it's not really "GNU/Linux". It would be more like Android/Linux. There's probably even an RMS rant about it on the GNU site somewhere, haha.

Like many Linux flavors Android would be debatable in the Gnu category since it has some nonfree software included but for the sake of a poll like this I think it would be best to peg as that even if it's purely based on the kernel
I'm only trying to simplify this poll for people who are not that computer savy.

I'd say stay away from Mint if you plan on running a dedicated VM within it. Mint is a nice OS but it's very bloated. I suppose you could always do a minimal net install though and build it up yourself.

Curious of this myself since it's usually just games that keep people from making the switch. There's more than likely stable alternatives for anything else.

Evernote has quite a few alternatives, thinkorswim can be installed on Mint/Ubuntu but the directions seem dependant on the version that you're running.

I read that the evernote alternative aren't very good. I also read the MS office alternative aren't as good.
I just started the move out of windows a week ago. So I am working on a lot of things. It can't hurt to keep my windows VM running until I get everything sorted out.
I wanted to run everything in VMs. I have solaris, bsd, true OS, osx, windows 7, many gnu/linux flavors all in VMs.
I tried MS hypervisor and Oracle esxi, but they both suck. Oracle linux has a VM platform you can install. I may try that.

Thinkorswim looks like they have an official Linux client available: https://mediaserver.thinkorswim.com/installer/install.html
It's looks like there's some Evernote alternatives for Linux, one called "Nevernote" is recommended by Evernote themselves so I would check into that. Worth a shot at least.

Oh and as far as MS Office alternatives go, LibreOffice is just as good if you ask me, and I have to use MS Office everyday at work. There's also WPS Office which is supposed to be pretty good, but I've never tried it myself. Download them both and give them a shot since it doesn't cost anything.
Here's a comparison between MS Office and LibreOffice though:

I don't really see any major differences between MS and LibreOffice OpenOffice is also great, it's just become less popular in recent years.

Yes it is, it's the version that Microsoft developed for Linux and Mac.
Looks like it has issues if you need to code in C# though.
Personally I'd just say learn to use Vim or Emacs for coding though

From Wikipedia
Visual Studio Code is a source code editor developed by Microsoft for Windows, Linux and macOS. It includes support for debugging, embedded Git control, syntax highlighting, intelligent code completion, snippets, and code refactoring. It is also customizable, so users can change the editor's theme, keyboard shortcuts, and preferences. It is free and open-source,[6][7] although the official download is under a proprietary license.[5] ____
Microsoft Visual Studio is an integrated development environment (IDE) from Microsoft. It is used to develop computer programs for Microsoft Windows, as well as web sites, web applications and web services. Visual Studio uses Microsoft software development platforms such as Windows API, Windows Forms, Windows Presentation Foundation, Windows Store and Microsoft Silverlight. It can produce both native code and managed code.
Visual Studio includes a code editor supporting IntelliSense (the code completion component) as well as code refactoring. The integrated debugger works both as a source-level debugger and a machine-level debugger. Other built-in tools include a forms designer for building GUI applications, web designer, class designer, and database schema designer. It accepts plug-ins that enhance the functionality at almost every level—including adding support for source-control systems (like Subversion) and adding new toolsets like editors and visual designers for domain-specific languages or toolsets for other aspects of the software development lifecycle (like the Team Foundation Server client: Team Explorer).
Visual Studio supports different programming languages and allows the code editor and debugger to support (to varying degrees) nearly any programming language, provided a language-specific service exists. Built-in languages include C,[8] C++ and C++/CLI (via Visual C++), VB.NET (via Visual Basic .NET), C# (via Visual C#), and F# (as of Visual Studio 2010[9]). Support for other languages such as Python,[10] Ruby, Node.js, and M among others is available via language services installed separately. It also supports XML/XSLT, HTML/XHTML, JavaScript and CSS. Java (and J#) were supported in the past.
Microsoft provides a free version of Visual Studio called the Community edition that supports plugins and is available at no cost for all users.

Windows 7 on my laptop, and sometimes Linux in a VM. Or I ssh to the Linux computers at my school.
I have a cheap Android tablet with better screen resolution than my laptop (2560x1600), and I have an app on that called "Debian noroot" that lets me do some Linux stuff. I can't figure out how to get it to do X11 forwarding over SSH though, not sure if it's not possible without rooting the tablet or what. The -X option doesn't do it.

I'm considering Android to be Linux even if it doesn't fit the GNU portion of it. And same with iOS, just peg it with OSX, it's another Mac product running a Unix based OS. Honestly, I didn't think that many people would primarily browse this site on mobile because the last time I did I remember it was not the most mobile friendly site out there.

Nowadays, on most sites mobile traffic makes up the majority share. My YouTube videos receive 50-70% mobile shares, whole they used to receive 5% a few years ago. You'd be surprised. I'm browsing from a Cyanogenmod phone right now.

I'm just the oddball, I ditched my smartphone almost 2 years ago and never looked back. I like to do my internets on a real computer and I work on computers from home for a living so it's not that difficult for me. Still wouldn't want a smartphone if I had a different career though, hate feeling tethered to it all the time (and I don't even do social media), let alone watching how far other peoples addictions have come with thier phones.

I use Windows cause I'm a moron and I like the emotional trauma of having to deal with random crashes at the most crucial of times.

Yea, it's very unfortunate but as a computer scientist you need to keep the mobile market in mind if you want to do well.

I'm in IT so I don't really consider myself a computer scientist. I don't have to program all that often and when I do it's usually just bash scripts to automate things. I understand computers well but I'm still so far out of the loop with todays society and I like that

I use Debian. I've gone from DOS to Windows 3.1, 95, 98, 2000, XP, to Slackware, to Red Hat, to Debian, to Gentoo, back to Debian *probably missing some in that list*. I have supported Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8 systems but fuck that shit.

I'm a dedicated Win7 fan. Rock solid o/s with few problems. At least that's been my experience for the past five years I've been using it.

That's what I run on my main machine as well. I can't really relate when people talk about contemporary versions of Windows being crash-prone. I remember OS crashes being very frequent in the days of Windows 95 and 98, but that lineage died with Windows Me.

That's because 95, 98 and ME were utter pieces of shit. They finally did something right with XP, but even that took 3 service packs. 7 ran fine right out of the box, though. It was about time, Microsoft!

The computer I was using until my daughter left for uni, about 7 years ago, was running on win ME. She left me the one I'm using now which is running on win XP, which is getting realy 'crashy' lately.
It's a Dell dimention 3100. The guy at the computer shop told me it wouldn't be able to run any of the later OS. (I did buy some Linux OS cd's to try on the old ME comp years ago but when I tried to use one of them, It warned me I needed to "make a new partition"? so I gave up) Is the guy at the computer shop bull-shitting me to try and sell me a new comp?
Bear in mind this comp this has never had a what I think you call a 'reinstall' which, I've read, some people do regularly. The fact that it's been used daily since 2006, as well as it is, is quite remarkable. No?
Can anyone tell me. What's the best way of transfering files from the old ME comp, to the XP comp? The memory stick I bought to do this doesn't work in the ME comp. When I tried it, the comp says something like "files needed for this are missing".

95, 98 and Me all had MS-DOS running under the hood, that's why they were shit. XP was when they started having all Windows offerings be NT-based, rather than just aiming the NT-based Windows releases at professionals and offering unreliable shit to consumers. Windows 2000 came out at around the same time as Windows Me, but I remember it being quite decent.
