What's the best WBS Tek to use?

I've read through quite a few of them, some say they are out dated. Just wondering what's the best Tek some of the more experienced cultivators use? Thanks in advance...

Throw it out and use Sorghum or Rye? I have no idea. Only time I used it, was slimey as shit and a pain in the arse to work with. Would be interested to see if there is actually a way to use it with less issues.

I've used it before and had really good results. I just remember seeing a Tek that mentioned you didn't have to remove the floaters, and I was trying to take the easy way out. I thought maybe taking out the floaters was out dated. Also the amount of time to soak the WBS may be out dated in the older teks. I went ahead and went with Frank's WBS Tek, just didn't add the gypsum or coffee. Last time I soaked for 24 hours the WBS seemed a little more saturated than I would have liked, so I am just going to soak for about 8 hours this time. I would love to use rye berries I just haven't been able to find them around here yet. Tried popcorn once and that was a disaster but I have read people who swear by it.

Empty the bag of WBS into a large container. Take that container and throw it out. Buy a bag of oats and use them instead. Works like a charm for me.
In all seriousness, I know it's not what you asked but I think oats is better, cheaper and easier to work with

I am going to do several dozen quarts, I would love to try oats, I have those in the kitchen. What's the Tek you use and I will definitely do a tub using them.

Yep after I take a nap heading to the Tractor Supply Company and grabbing a bag of oats, WBS works but it's messy and a PITA. Appreciate the Tek reference seems easy as 1-2-3.

it does get easier..
24hr soak. do not simmer. drain. load into jars slight wet. pc 2 hrs.
done. do not put birdseed on the stove.
if you cant get it right after that then go back to pf tek.

I used to use WBS a lot and thought it was dead simple and worked 100% of the time. I'd just put it in a big boiling pot with 3x as much water as WBS and some used coffee grinds and throw in some Gypsum too ... Boil for 15 minutes ... let it steep for another 20 or so ... then pour it into a big collander and shake / let it drain for a half hour or so making sure no more drips even if I shake it ...
Then load it into whatever ... bags ... jars ... PC for 90 mins... Inoculate and it just worked. Never pooled or puddled on the bottom ... colonized fast ... easy to break up ...

Honestly, I just pour mine straight from the bag to the pot to soak and simmer until I can easilly break or "pop" a seed with my fingernail, then rinse the WBS off while straining. Fill jar 2/3 full and PC with one layer of tin foil for 90 min at 15 PSI.

Why do you soak and not simmer? Hasn't soaking been proven to simply allow more shit to grow while simmering pushes the water content?

1. adding heat to wbs will cause it to clump..making a sticky mess. you have to watch it like a hawk. honestly i could figure it out but im not making dinner here. im making drugs.
2. the argument of why we soak has been talked about too much for something so basic. water into a grain is the end goal. ive failed so many times is shocking. however. 1 area i hardly ever fail is bad prep. since late summer ive had 2 jars go bad out of many..many many jars. and they were both filter failures. other grains you only boil them to steam dry them right? i think i read that somewhere
in the end jars will almost always go bad if you fuck up and make them too wet. too dry maybe they stall or take forever but that never happens to me either.

Are oats really that much better? I've used oats plenty, but lately the grocery store has had 5 pound bags of WBS for $1.59. it saves me from driving all the way across Denver to the feed store.

I remember reading somewhere when I was researching using WBS, that WBS was a good to use because the seeds were small and there were so many of them that when they were shaken and broken up there were so many points of recolonization. Anyone else know what I am speaking of? I am definitely going to do some jars with oats, and some with WBS. This may be a stupid question but does it matter let's say I have to use 6 quarts of spawn per tub, if I used 3 quarts of WBS colonized and 3 quarts of oats colonized and mixed them with the coir and verm.? Doesn't really matter as long as it's the same strain does it? I'm figuring it shouldn't just making sure though.

Definitely some truth to that. I used to do WBS only in grain bags which were very easy to break up ... Can't say about breaking them up in grain jars though ... for that and having a lot of inoculation points, RGS is hard to beat although by volume not as heavy or nutrition rich.

thats the only pain. and rinsing.
but yah i skim everything off and wash the seed thoroughly. i do that for like 30min. then soak it in a stock pot/bucket until the same time the next day. repeat the process so every day you spend 30min washing/rinsing, then another 30min draining the previous days batch and loading it up. stagger those times every 4 hours for a weekend. find times.

for me, yes. a solid yes. 40cents a lb for 80%millet wbs is hard to beat. and i get it at the foodmart.
however if i still lived with my folks and could walk to the closet TSC then id be using rye or oats.
skimming and its smell is the only real wbs drawback... and you dont even need to skim. its just a preference.
