Meteorology - A Discussion * 1
    #24021584 - 01/18/17 10:28 PM (7 years, 12 days ago)

Most of us talk about imminent weather, good or bad, only in the relative comfort of awkward elevator conversations and supermarket check-out lines.

Our existence and adapdability are both based on weather, rather climatology. Our mountains, valleys, and landmass formations are all directly affected by weather, thus weathering, on a daily basis.

The amount of snowpack in the West dictates food/feed growth and sustainability for the entire year all the way to the MS river.

When we look towards the horizon, clouds in their many forms, and the way they move, give us more insight than any other natural creation of what's to come soon. If you have some basic knowledge on the subject.

I invite you, The Shroomery to share your weather stories. Significant or not, so that I can fullfil my desire of explaining what happened in those situations with science.

With the Willamette Valley siting between some fairly large mountains on one side,
and the ocean on the other with an almost constant Westerly flow in Winter, you end up
with :whatthefuck2:

Basically valleys, not just Willamette go through something called inversions. Here in Colorado, our valleys this time of the year usually hold onto a cold inversion after large amounts of snow, but due to your proximity to the ocean (which is around 50-55 degrees now) doesn't allow much in the way of Orographic lift.
The lift is what causes cold cloud tops to build over terrain and potentially drop freeing precipitation, even up to 40F as long as the humidity is under 50% right before the precip is about to fall.

Now, back to inversions. Once an easterly flow comes about. Usually later on in Winter, but happens occasionally this time of the year, the cold air coming down from the mountains will rest in the valley until a ridge, trough, or L/H pressure system knocks that settled air out.

Thus why you can experience a 50F today and an ice storm tomorrow. Don't worry, no ice storm for you in the foreseeable future.

We are also experiencing the Pineapple Express "stream" this winter. Meaning moisture from Hawaii is constantly coming in through the jet stream, and it's set up this way for at least another 5 days, after it being in place for the past 3+ weeks. Pineapple Express years like this one are rather rare, and to give you a better point of reference, due to it, California's extremely severe 5 year drought has been eradicated by roughly 60% in these short weeks due to system after system moving through.

Yea, the first one that came through SoCal over the last couple days just made its way into my area this afternoon. We're under a Winter Storm warning until noon, Sunday.

Expecting 15-20" of snow through Sunday.

Warning will probably be extended into Wednesday due to the two other systems you mentioned taking essentially the same path out this way for a total storm total of anywhere between 3 and 5 feet.

You guys out there must be having all sorts of landslides and rocks falling after all this time with no rain. We had a very dry Fall as well and we've been under imminent avalanche warnings every day for going on three weeks now.

Some truly crazy shit to see in person. Even on not so steeply graded mountain faces there's so much loose snowpack that it's constantly running down into the valleys (towns).
