Buying a used car 5k budget 1

So I have around 5k to spend on a used car. I'm thinking probably a 4cyl rice burner.
What would you be looking at for that price point? I just want something reliable and not too bad on gas.
I was looking at a civic and a Corolla recently.

Do you live in a salt state? As in, salt the roads during the winter time. Personally I'd look for a Subaru legacy or Forester in that price range. They are going to have over 100,000 miles on them at that price point but as long as they were taken care of they should give you another 100,000+ miles. Just make sure you find one that recently has had the timing chain, head gasket, and water pump replaced. It's common place to replace those things at the 100,000 mile mark on most Subarus but you don't want to be paying to do that yourself or you'll end up way over budget.
I know many people look passed KIA but the Rio5 has made a few lists as a very reliable car and you should be able to pick one up cheap.
If you like American cars you might be able to find a higher mileage v6 Impala around 5k. Just avoid Impalas made before 07 (I think it's 07) GM was absolute garbage for a while.
If you live in a salt state, I would avoid any Saturns even though you'll likely find many of them around with lower miles in your price range. Saturns have been pretty notorious for the ball joints going on them when driven in salt states.

Lol or blow your motor at 15k and have to pay for a rebuild. Although if buying before the quality turned to shit they do make great vehicles. They're pricier to maintain though.

Look for oil leaks underneath.
Check the speedometer. anything less than 80K is good IMO.
Check the engine for any damage.
And make sure to put a decal on the doors that say "Rice Burner" for looks

Subaru is sorta a college kidncar or respectable professional that is sorta cheap. It's not homo til ya put all sorts of bumper stickers on it.
Yesterday some fag in a rice burner that was old and crapper floored it down the road. He was all emo faggot looking.
I don't like it when diesel trucks floor it and get all loud shooting out pollution. Nor when rice burners with their gay ass tricked muffler floor it.
Be a man and get a kick ass 70s van or VW Bus!

and honda isn't? They both are big in their respective tuner scenes, they're both Japanese companies.
Practical cars aren't the opposite of rice cars, American muscle cars are. If you are buying a car for practical purposes this shouldn't even factor in, and by and large "rice burners" have been more practical since I was born at least.

AWD is overrated for street driving and adds quite a bit to the cost, keep that in mind when considering a subaru.

Leave at-least 1k in your budget for parts, tires, insurance deductible; and expenses such as repairs and maintenance. Newer does not always mean better, late model subaru's,toyotas honda accords, acura legends and even domestics are usually a good buy.
When you go for a test drive make sure you check that all the fluids are at the proper levels. Bad tire pressure could be an indicator that a tire will have bald spots, the recommended psi is on the door sill. Check suspension for broken links. If the steering wheel judders on the highway its probably a cv axle or wheel bearing.

Old Subarus were made in Japan .

I'd get an Acura RSX . I had one for about 8 years and abused the shit out of it . Redlined it everyday . The only thing I ever had to fix was an oxy sensor . It had over 160,000 when I sold it and was still super reliable .

Just don't buy a Chevy. In my experience they are the lame duck in the new generation of American sedan type cars.
You're going to pay a premium for Toyota/Scoobydoo, the former because of the reputation and the latter because of the reputation and all the unnecessary shit they put in like AWD and anus heaters.
In my opinion Subaru stopped being cool when they changed from the GC8 bodystyle on the Impreza. Legacys still looked cool for a while longer but these days cars all look kinda whack, at least entry/mid level sedans. Just get something that will get you where you need to go, and save up for a track car if that is a goal of yours. That's what I'm doing at least.

Narrow down your search to cars you like and then go to a forum that is dedicated to that specific type of car and ask what the best model years and trim packages were.
Even high quality car manufacturers make a dud from time to time. And within certain makes and model years of the same car you can identify things to avoid. For example, third generation ford escorts came with two different engines, one engine was notorious for dropping valve seats destroying the motor, and the other engine was a solid performer. Knowing what to look for can mean the difference between a 150,000 mile car and a 300,000 mile car. So make use of the communities that specialize in whatever car you are looking at.
My vote for a high value car would be a Ford Focus with the 2.0 Duratech engine and a manual transmission with manual windows. It's a well designed motor and uses a timing chain instead of a belt. Those cars fly under the radar because they are not a vehicle that people usually think is reliable, but it is.
The Honda Accord, CRV, and Element all have the 2.4l i-Vetec motor which also uses a timing chain, Honda makes high quality automatic transmissions so any of those cars in an Auto should be fine. However on those cars the valve lashing is a critical maintenance item at about 100k miles, luckily its only a $250 job at the dealer.
Speaking of timing chains, if you are buying a car with 80-100k miles on it, you need to figure out if it has a timing belt and if so, you need to factor that maintenance into your budget and get it done on schedule otherwise you could ruin the motor.
If your looking at Subaru keep in mind that the models more than a few years old have timing belts and interference engines. There is nothing wrong with that but the timing belt maintenance is absolutely critical because if the belt fails you will ruin the motor.
Maintenance items, engines, transmissions, and specific model years should all play into your purchase. Like I said in the beginning, best to find some cars you like and then research them to figure out what models are the most reliable and to know what specific maintenance items need to be done.

alright heres the deal.
if you dont really know much about cars, you want something model year 1997 or newer...
secondly.. go find some and drive them. if you have time and arent rushed to buy a vehicle. go shopping. its not going to hurt anything.
if you are shooting for fuel efficiency i would go with a toyota. camry or something of the sort. yeah, hondas are fuel efficient but are notorious for having shit transmissions.
if you are looking just for a ride, and cost of fuel isnt an issue, see what drives nicest to you.
also, when buying used like someone else said. dont blow your whole budget on it.. it will need repairs that may or may not be seen at first sight.
oh and if you are using craigslist, stay away from the scams.
good luck. if you have any questions on your journey.. dont hesitate to ask.

I'm in agreement with these.
avoid any honda made from 2001 to 2007, they are absolutely plagued with problems, most are serious issues under recall and just because the recall work was done it doesnt mean the car is in good shape, it just means the dealers claim to have done the work and you will have a fight to get it done right
