interesting
I don't have an eye for finding them near sweetgums and pines yet, only grass types.

wonderfvl said: Hey Guys, Since the Georgia Team is in a lull with the arrival of the cold, I wanted to post something I’ve found interesting, and wanted to see if any of you do. Since I’m one of the world’s worst at finding weilii, I’ve been considering making my yard a weillii habitat. While researching sweetgum & pine, I ran across these references about some properties of sweetgum & pine…
From Atlanta’s Walter Reeves: “You may be interested to know that sweetgum seed contain shikimic acid, the starting ingredient for making antiviral drugs to combat bird flu.” http://www.walterreeves.com/gardening-q-and-a/sweetgum-copious-seeds/
From eattheweeds.com: A shortage in shikimic acid, used to make Tamiflu, led researchers to look for another source besides the star anise tree. They found it in sweetgum trees & pine needles. http://www.eattheweeds.com/?s=sweetgum+tree
I thought these two sources were kind of cool. Our weilii seems to be seeking an environment with natural antivirals. Maybe I should sprinkle some Tamiflu around the yard, lol.
I've read theories that suggest the Weilii feed off the sweetgum and pine root systems/decaying matter in a parasitic way but which would be described as a symbiotic relationship. The mycelium attach to the plant cells giving them water and other things, the plant gives the fungus nutrients it needs. Win win scenario all around. This also suggests intelligence in things we perceive to have no consciousness. These two seemingly unintelligent organisms communicate with each other, know what each other needs, help each other out. THIS suggests that WE TOO can AND DO communicate with them just as well. Hope this wasn't too off topic. Lol nature nerd rant
EDIT: it's mutualistic not parasitic. Sorry

This thread is for confirmed actives only. Create your own thread next time please. You do not have caerulescens (weilii).

Nice doc. I love when they dry out and blue like that. Looks like a beefier version of this one I found last month.
I've had a lot of fun this season, especially during the nice spring flushes.

This find was on November 26th. They were growing in a small red clay cave surrounded by loblolly pines , american sweetgums and mixed grass with bermuda grass and crab grass. I wonder if the cave warms them.

I may go out on a 1st of December hunt today. With all the humidity and high enough temperatures there may be a decent cluster somewhere!

Today I checked my favorite spot and was surprised to find a large cluster. There were many smaller clusters in the surrounding area. They were of poor quality in general though. They must have appeared within the last 7 days because I was there a week ago and only a few were around back then.

I hope the cave produces again this year! If it does I will be sure to get a habitat shot. I regret not getting as many habitat shots as I could have this year.

Nice blue pins doc. I only saw one weilii, but the ovoids are fruiting again!
Found these two blue beauties at the smaller of the two patches. Nothing at the larger patch, as far as I could tell.
ovoids (Dec 3rd)

well-hidden weilii (Dec 3rd)
