Well I've been freed of my IV chains. Sorry to say nature didn't provide on the well kept grasses of this fine medical facility. Alas the hunt continues, and Cham starts a new chapter in his everliving quest of magic.

Go get'em Cham... glad you're on the mends... train those boys to find them lol... takin my 3 year old along with my dog and I a few times... he loves being out in nature, touching worms and things, etc... probably getting a new lab pup soon, so was wondering if anyone has ever heard of dogs that can sniff out other mushrooms like they do for truffles... doubt it, but man that would be terrific... good luck out there guys... I haven't found jack squat... but buddy in Maryland just found another 300 ovoids... ugh...

I got some hopeful spots marked on the map I'm gonna check out today after work. I take my 5 yr old all time. He thinks mushrooms are gross but he loves being outside lol.

I haven't logged in for so long. I'm so lazy I keep up with the board nearly everyday I just don't log in
Wanted to share something I've thought about over many years of unsuccessful careulescens hunting here in SC.
Elevation.. It seems that elevation could play a major role in the distribution of caerulescens around the SE. Here where I'm at, we have EVERYTHING necessary for perfect habitat. Pine, sweetgum, red clay, bermuda, and landslide is an easy habitat to find. (As well as pine beetle damage)
I noticed a pattern last year by researching the average elevations of N GA counties, areas in Mexico, and even one place here in SC (which I'm about 3 hrs northeast of) where caerulescens have been found. They all share a common denominator, their elevation is very similar and about 500 feet or more (cannabis affects my memory a little bit) higher than where I'm at, and nowhere else in a low lying place has recorded finds.
Am I crazy or do y'all think I might be onto something ? Maybe this could add to helping narrow down even more for the habitat and distribution of this amazing mushroom.
I'm pretty sure ill find them soon enough and prove myself wrong.

I think that hurricane opal in 1995 that brought the spores of these mushrooms here only dropped them off on high elevation places, but that was 20 years ago so now they're being found in other low-lying places. so no I don't think that's the only place to find them you can find them everywhere and anywhere with promising habitat.

Cham thanks for your input
I don't think that specific hurricane had anything to do with their North American distribution. People just probably started finding them around the 2000s, bet you they've been around longer than opal. In fact they were described in the southeast in the 20s or 30s I believe it may have even been 1800s.

yessir, hammer is correct... according to wiki:
"Psilocybe caerulescens was first reported from near Montgomery, Alabama, by Murrill in 1923 on sugarcane mulch, not re-documented from that locality since."

And Cham, you certainly cannot find them anywhere and everywhere that has promising habitat. That's just not true. I truly appreciate your input, the more minds put together offers more angles and more fruit we can harvest from conversation.
I don't intend to hijack this thread I believe it is an interesting theory of mine which might benefit the community and hell I just like y'all anyways. I love the GA thread every year, we miss out here in the Carolina's on stuff like this.

Thanks Hammer. And I didn't mean they'll just grow anywhere. I just meant of there nearby, promising can produce near confirmed areas. But I have no experience required to make any intelligent inputs. I just wanna learn. But I learned that hurricane stuff wrong I guess

There is a plethora of outdated or just plain bad information on this site if you know where to look, so it's not your fault. That myth is very popular, I think it's a cool story it's just not necessarily true.

It's just a confusing history because the GA caerulescens was initially named as a new species (P. weilii).

Opal didn't bring spores here. These mushrooms have been here. Opal was a seriously heavy rain season and they were most likely very easily found. I've had similar years like 05 and 06 where literally I could just drive around and find them almost everywhere.
