Curious question

I have a PF Cake on its 3. Flush. I am just wondering would be possible. If I sterilize another jar and then crumble the already fruiting cake and mix it with new sterilized subtrate mix to create a new cake without syringe ? Will it somehow make the mushroom less potent ?
It may be a dumb question but I am very curious.

Innoculating with cake material is possible but as its been exposed so long to the air it will be riddled with shit so it will need to be put on agar then take transfers till its clean. Just take a print from this flush make a syringe if you dont wanna do agar work although but the syringe wont be super clean either, but still a better plan than using old cake.

You wouldn't want to expand a 3rd flush substrate even if you could clean it up. It's near the end of its lifespan at that point.

I crumbled up cakes after they were spent and buried them in my garden. wouldn't ya know mushies came up. Cakes to cakes seems a little to dirty, but I've never tried it.

Aha okay so there is this lifespan problem too ? I am under the impression that the mushroom will keep growing as long as they have enough nutrition to support the growth. That is why I thought by introducing them to a new mixture I can prolong their lifespan and like recycle old cake again and again.
So it is not like that ? Can someone point me to a good reading Material regarding the lifespan of mushrooms.
Thank you.

It's the lifespan of anything. Cells can only divide so many times before the telomeres on the chromosomes get too short and senescence sets in. Just providing more food is like trying to keep your 90 year old Grandfather alive another 20 years by feeding him a big turkey dinner.
