Quick Audio Video Question
    #24017289 - 01/17/17 12:40 PM (7 years, 13 days ago)

Hey all,
Need some advice and/or opinions here for a minor issue.
I have an older flat screen in my bedroom. It's a great tv but it has some limitations. It has an HDMI jack which I am using for Roku. I need to hook up another device that also needs an HDMI jack, but the tv just has 1. The available jacks are 2 A/V R/Y/W hookups an old coaxial hookup and a VGA hookup. I have to hook it directly into the TV(or an adapter), I have no device it can be run through.
So my question is, would it be better to get an adapter converting the HDMI to R/Y/W A//V plug or 1 that converts it to VGA or doesn't it really matter?? Alternatively is there someway I haven't considered?
I understand the picture will no longer be HD, that's not a problem.
Much appreciated

i believe R/Y/W is component which is pretty decent. Best video input for TVs before HDMI.

I would go the HDMI to component route myself. But u mentioned VGA. If your TV has VGA, a HDMI to VGA adapter would be easier to find.

Yup, that's what I was going to suggest as well. I think that's your best path forward and maintains HD for your second device.

oh yeah, those.

I believe they are called HDMI switches as it doesnt actually split the signal, but switches between one of the three inputs.

Good suggestions. I just looked up both an hdmi to vga adapter as well as a switch/splitter and both $15  or less.
So the real issue I guess is whether I want it kept in HD.
Thanks for the advice.

Whatever you do, don't use VGA. It's an old standard that deserves to die already. R/Y/W is pretty gucci but splitter is best case scenario!

It's a bad idea to convert a digital signal (HDMI) to analog signal (VGA/RYW) for a number of reasons.  You will likely lose the audio completely, the picture will suffer greatly, and be subject to latency issues.  HDMI is digital, the screen is digital, so keeping the signal digital all the way to the screen ensures the best quality. It's just not worth it when an HDMI splitter is available and probably around the same price.
