Bolete edibility thread hold up?
    #24016272 - 01/16/17 11:53 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

Saw this quote from ToxicMan but it is from over 11 years ago so I just wanted to see if it held up. Haven't heard it before. Never eaten any boletes, because I never felt comfortable ID'ing them. They are hard to distinguish for me for whatever reason.

Thanks.

"The actual rule with boletes is that all of the poisonous boletes stain blue, have red or orange tube mouths, or both. There are edible boletes that have either of even both of those features, but all of the poisonous species in North America have one or both. So if you find a bolete with neither feature it's guaranteed to not be poisonous - it may be nasty to eat, but it won't poison you.

Happy mushrooming!"

Yes, that rule is still good. It was an old rule when I put it out here, and little has changed.

Please remember that it only applies to North America.

Happy mushrooming!
