    #2401524 - 03/04/04 05:57 AM (20 years, 19 days ago)

when harvesting has anyone ever cut the mushroom of right at the base??? I ask this because of the damage picking mushrooms does to the casing and substrate. i know with a plant if you cut off a brance two could grow back could somthing simaler happen with mushrooms?

leaving a chunk of mushroom to rot on the top of the caseing would do major damage. you should be able to just twist and pull the mushroom from the surface with minimal damage to the caseing layer, then re-apply more caseing material to the spots that come up with the mushrooms to prepare the caseing for its second flush.

Yep, leaving the base attached isnt
great for a casing.
Just twist them off, you will still get
some damage, but it soon recovers.

It is best to use scissors when croping wood
loving actives, as there base goes deep int the wood chips,
but its not needed with Cubensis as the pins form right at
the surface, so a gentle twist and pull is fine.

I hadn't known that about wood lovers, thanx for the info!
I tend to rip cubensis right out of the cake by their little mycelium roots, heh heh.
Seriously though, I've had more problems cutting them off and leaving stumps than I have by pulling them.
I only tend to cut when pulling would also pull some that aren't ready, and then I only leave the stumps for a day or two until the rest are ready.
