Saguaro!
    #24014825 - 01/16/17 01:57 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

Is there a consensus for the psychoactivity of saguaro cacti? I just ordered one that is supposed to be 4"-6". I'll do a large mammal bioassay in a few decades when it has grown a bit. Anybody else got one in cultivation? I'll post pics when I get it potted up.

Yeah man they are. There was this thread https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/16546151/fpart/all/vc/1
.  The guy who posted this was obviously a total newb and could very well have just experienced a placebo. But there are other anecdotal reports online of people altering their conciousness with it. I would be willing to bet that it is worth a try if available.
How big are your cacti, and how slow do they grow? Any tips?

I have a small one in the ground. And the other is about 2 ft tall in a pot. They grow super slow. The 2ft tall one is really fat thoigh.

Saguaro is EXTREMELY bitter. Way beyond any sort of trich bitterness. It does not even compare. Yes supposedly they are active but extraction would be the only feasible way to use saguaro. But... these are ancient giants, and unfortunately they are frequently vandalized and mistreated. Best to just leave them alone.

???
Did you read this thread? We are growing them. I live in southern Florida. Best to do whatever the hell I want with the plants that I grow. Did you try eating them yourself? The guy in the thread I linked to above and this guy http://www.danielvitalis.com/blog/2009/12/ever-tried-this-psychoactive-cactus both consumed the flesh without doing any type of extraction whatsoever.

Keep your shorts on bro. That seedling you have isnt going to have anything good in it for a LONG TIME. Its a free country I'll say what I want.

There is also a Mexican (false) Saguaro, called a Cardon (thistle), which is also said to contain psychoactive alkaloids.

I am able to germinate seeds (from ethical sources) but don't have any personal experiences with them.

I have heard about an old business practice.

Environmentalists are very vague about it, so they don't give you any bad ideas.

But, unscrupulous people can monopolize a natural resource, by taking some for themselves, and killing all the rest.

Noone is realistically going to do that, here.

The thing about saguaro is they are so old. In the wild it takes 60+ years before they start to sprout arms. It takes about 30 years for them to grow to 12 inches tall. The growth rate speeds up considerably as they mature, but the full grown branched out specimens are all over 100 years old. The really big, well branched out individuals are probably 150+ years old. In cultivation with irrigation they grow faster than that, but I am talking about the wild ones.

If you ever hike in saguaro country you'll see that many of them, especially the big ones, are shot up and vandalized. They are the traditional target practice of the Sonoran desert.

As far as psychoactivity goes they are rumored to be active, though i have never talked to anyone who has actually used them for that purpose. I have done the lick test on mature saguaro toppled by storms and the bitterness was extreme, way beyond trich bitterness. In my opinion these ancient giants need to be treated with a lot of respect.

Here is what $12.99 got me.

Thanks for the info grey fox and durian. That sucks that people enjoy abusing cacti in their native habitat. I'm nowhere near that.

I am not anti-human, in terms of individual self-sufficiency, but do believe those peoples' houses will return to nature, within 5yrs of a credit contraction or Malthusian catastrophe.  I have literally watched housing developments fall into decay, before they are finished.

I think cacti will take over their territory, when the vandals are long-gone.

I would like to see the inspiration, which people are getting, from these visionary states, put to good use, and would consider myself a conservationist.

I respect the length of time it took for these to grow, but also think we should make more of a thing, when it is good and valuable. We can preserve land, under private ownership, if we want to be more responsible.

Anyone altruistic and proactive is welcome to :pm: me, if they would like to collaborate.

Here it is potted up

I'm not sure exactly what you are saying here, Durian. But I think I agree with it. If I didn't live in a little apartment and had a yard I would order some saguaro seeds and get some going. They are so cheap.

Usually, none of the most ordinary stuff you can buy at the gas station is produced within driving distance of your house. We are not expected to know anything good or useful.

But, it may be humanly possible to hold tracts of arid land, under conservatorship. I will learn the particulars, if enough people are interested, but many govt websites are presently under maintenance, due to the change of administrations.
