What would be the minimum recommended height of a storage tote for 5 cakes?
Home depot has 6 or 16qt bins which are 7in tall or should I go with a taller one like a 27qt?

Taller. Remember you're going to want 4-5 inches of perlite in there to set your cakes on, and then mushrooms are going to grow up off the cake.

Oh hell yeah I'm definitely doing that next. My wife's PC is small, basically used for making pot roast so the smaller the grow the better.
Also, what's the advantage of a SGFC chamber? Wouldn't I be able to control humidity better with a sealed tub and just fan/mist a few times a day?

What size tub is that, 27qt? That looks like a decent size.

I don't think anyone should go above the size of half of this. I forget what size but I think 100? Once the 4 inches of perlite gets so heavy, it'll start to bow. Bigger isn't always better. This fit 24-30. Two SGFC's built to spec worked better than a big honking bastard. And since you'll be keeping your sgfc around after you've learned agar and culture work, one that fits 12 or 18 max is probably best.

Does your perlite not fall out of the holes at the bottom?

You don't really want to be worried about humidity as much as you want to worry about FAE. FAE is the most important factor in any fruiting chamber. A sealed tub will only suffocate your cakes. Fanning will not help you
SGFC allows constant high passive FAE and works with the perlite to keep RH high enough for your mushrooms (anywhere from 40-70%) Your substrate must be misted frequently to keep the surface moist.
Monotub works with the substrate to cycle air and keep up RH on its own. The heat given off from the substrate cycles air through the bottom holes and out the top. The benifit of a monotub is that you can dial it in to suit the substrates needs during stages of growth and is generally very low maintenance.

Thanks. I guess I shouldn't be too worried with humidity anyway apart from the usual misting, I've got a whole house humidifier going 24/7 and it's around 55-60 RH usually. I was going to buy a hygrometer but I read that those are all Chinese crap and not worth it.
When you mist your SGFC do you mist the substrate and sides or just substrate?

U mist when your cakes look dry.
Mist the cakes then re wet your perlite too. Try avoid spraying the fruits.

I'm still waiting for my cakes to colonize but I actually inoculated 5 more jars that might finish around the same time, maybe give or take a week.
Will a 27 quart tub fit 10 half pint cakes? I didn't read anywhere about how far to space out cakes so I was curious if they would all fit.
What I was hoping to do is place 5 cakes on one side of the tote and then put the other 5 on the other side whenever they're ready to fruit.

U want to space your cakes about 2-3 inches apart on all sides.
And yes, u can put 5 on one side then add 5 more on the other side no problem.

I'm still going to put the sgfc in the dirt. Fuck a monoculture I'll just do a shoot out between the SGFC and top fruiting in a mono with a few clones.

Cool, I really didn't want to drill 2 tubs. Drilling 1 tub sounds like enough of a pain.
