Funky Smell...
    #24015024 - 01/16/17 03:14 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

So yesterday I noticed an odd smell coming from my mono. It smells strong like a sharpie marker, kind of sour, acrid. I had the holes of the tub taped up while it was colonizing, which has been very slow. I spawned three 1 lb bags of rye berries to 4 lbs of horse poo 9 days ago and the surface of the sub is less than 10% colonized. Now obviously I know any smell other than earthy, mush and myc is no good. I said fuck it and stuffed the holes with poly last night, thinking maybe it was a gas exchange issue. I'm just letting it go now to see what happens, but I'm thinking I should just chuck it. Pretty bummed out obviously. Anyone have any ideas what could have caused this issue? Was it a result of not enough GE, or was it simply bad sub? Temp in my room has been between 70 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Also if it does end up putting out fruits would they even be safe to consume?

I've had this over and over.  It means that either your substrate wasn't prepped properly(not pasteurized long or hot enough or is too wet), or it can also mean that your spawn was bacterial.  I would tend to think it was the spawn that was bacterial, although an overly wet substrate would exacerbate that problem.

It's a good idea to take note of that smell because it's a good sign that you'll get mold popping up any day.  It doesn't 100% mean that you won't get a decent flush though.  I have pulled pretty close to 100% BE on tubs that smell just like you describe, but more often then not they get mold.

It'll be perfectly safe to consume those mushroom, unless there is something visibly wrong with the mushrooms that would make you think otherwise.  In my experience if mushrooms do get a chance to grow they look normal and are safe.  Obviously airborne mold would be a health hazard so trash bag it as soon as you see any mold showing.

My response didn't take into account that you said it was colonizing really slowly... I would say that means it's very bacterial to the point that it is doomed.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was thinking it was probably caused by my spawn being bacterial, as the rye bags were pretty moist when I got them. Actually now that I think about it when I got them there was actually moisture that had leaked out from the filter patch... I got everything from sponsored vendors, oh well.

Thanks for the quick reply. I know that it's better to not use pre made, but its really my only option for the foreseeable future. Would you suggest that for future projects I use something like Coco Coir for sub? Do you think I would have better luck with that over Horse poo, If I am ordering pre made?

I don't think many around here would have experience with purchased spawn.  I would have to see pictures of the bags to know if I'd trust them or not.

The biggest trip of my life was realizing all of the events and actions described in posts made by this account were never real and had never actually happened, but were instead the delusional ramblings of a severely mentally ill human being. I just had to move on for my own good. I love you all.

I like that analogy. I know I really need to start prepping my own spawn and sub, it will happen eventually. I need to just quit dicking around and buy a PC. Thank you for the quick reply.
