Candy Cap ID Request

Habitat: East Bay area. Underneath trees. In thick, clayish dirt.
Gills: Attached (running down onto the stem and then stopping at a clear point.). Burnt orange / red.
Stem: 0.5". Solid. Snapped cleanly.
Cap: ~2". Smaller samples were convex, becoming flared (like a brimmed hat) for bigger specimens.
Spore print color: Did not collect so could not take spore print.
Bruising: No obvious bruising.
Other information: Looked for the latex where I broke the stem, but didn't see anything obvious (also not positive exactly what its supposed to look like).

Lookin' good. Lactarius rubidus. Older specimens don't produce much latex, but you can usually see a little bit if you cut the cap.

Do you get a sweet maple-like smell from them?

Lactarius rufulus. Are the stems solid? you probably have some rubidus too. Their stems are usually hollow and they have a unique smell. Rufulus smells a little different and has solid stems frequently

I didn't notice any smell in particular.

I will gather a few tomorrow and take more pictures. Both species are edible correct? From my reading online they seem to be about the same culinary value.

To me, I can't smell the maple aroma until they're dried - when wet, it's almost a faint plastic/chemical smell. Once you dry them, it will be extremely clear if they're candies.
