candy caps in the bay area????
    #24012258 - 01/15/17 01:39 PM (7 years, 15 days ago)

Thinking of making the pilgrimage to the bay area for the magic of the candy cap.  I was hoping to get feedback if they are still out in abundance?  I am thinking about heading there within the next two weeks.  Any info would be helpful.  How is the unusually wet weather affecting the mycological world? found some but not much info in recent posts.
Thanks

Went candy cap hunting today and yesterday. They are definitely around but a good percentage are past their best by date. Last week was pretty prime, it's dried out a bit since then. I have found Lactarius rubidus grow exclusively in the dirt around oak trees. There are also some lookalikes (maybe Lactarius xanthogalactus) around so check that latex if you're not sure.

Here's what I found this morning under a single oak:

And this is what remained after I threw away the ones that had any trace of maggot damage:

Ghost, those might be L. rufulus. Pretty sure its a mixed batch, but i see a lot of that reddish color and some of the stipes are solid which is a-typical of that sp. They pop up later in the season and i have been seeing them more frequently than L. rubidus. I personally don't pick them(even though they are considered similar to rubidus) because I cant smell the maple nearly as much when they are dried. They just don't have the same punch as rubidus.

Haven't been to the woods in a week, but I did see some L. rubidus when I was there o/p.

Worst case it will be a good time.  not sure exactly where we are going but there are a lot of good spots.  anything is game.  Anyone want to go hunting hit me up.
