First-time grow looking for advice. Bruising??
    #24012208 - 01/15/17 01:11 PM (7 years, 15 days ago)

As stated, this is my first attempt at cultivation and I'm looking for some insight. I started with pf tek, as advised for first-timers, inoculated some half-pint jars, allowed to consolidate 7 days after full colonization, built a proper SGFC, 12-12 6500 CFL light schedule, followed the general guidelines step-by-step, at least I think I did. Here's where I'm at currently.

Couple things to note: these were taken right after a misting. For the 6 cakes on the left in the group picture, I ground the vermiculite in a coffee grinder to help it stick better to the cakes during the dunk and roll. I have some courser verm, and it wasn't sticking very well to the cakes as you can see in the 3 cakes on the right. The ground up verm also seems more prone to dry out easier, so I'm unsure if I'm misting too little or too much with these cakes. I fan and mist 4-5 times a day, but I feel like I'm misting too much water each time, even though the cakes seem extremely dry by the time I go to do the next misting.

As for the cyanotic coloring on a couple of the cakes; is this generally what bruising looks like, or is this mold? Also, when I was birthing the cakes out of the jars, I noticed that one of them had fully colonized the dry verm layer on top. Should I have tossed this cake and not used it to avoid possible contamination? I did put that cake in a separate body of water during the 24 hour dunk just to be safe.

Feel free to eat my ass alive if I've made some inane mistake. Any thoughts though?

Hi there
I don´t think you made any big mistake. The pf tek is very forgiving and I don´t beleave the size of the vermiculite particle would have that much impact, given the fact that they still fruit well even without dunk and roll.
It´s completely normal for the micellium to colonize the verm filter layer, especialy after 7 days consolidation, and such cake should be good to fruit, if no signs of contamination(visual or smell) are present.

The blue looks bruising to me.
About the misting: it depends on many factors. It´s hard to give an exact shedulle as at diferent situations of temperature, rh, size of fruiting chamber etc affect the speed of drying.

The easiest way woul be to buy a cheap hygrometer. You want humidity above 97%.
But again, pf tek with cubes is forgiving so you should still be fine without the hygrometer.

your cakes look really dry. Do u mist bro?

Also, keep the perlite moist. Has to be moist all the time.

These pictures were actually taken directly after a misting believe it or not. I probably do about 10 sprays each time I mist too.

I'm on my first grow too... Looks just like yours...  I don't think your misting enough. I've been misting all the walls and top until they just barely start to drip.  You could put a little layer of verm on top of the cakes to hold a little extra water also.

Thanks Amidogen, if there is low humidity in his chamber, and since he has been misting his cakes, it would be a good idea to mist the entire chamber.  Also added the verm on top will hold more moisture.  If you look at pictures of good grows there is always water beading on walls

thats because the heat from the substrate+growing mushrooms makes the inside of a FC a different temp then the outside. thats what cause the beading of water. similar to a car window fogging up.

misting your walls is like having a pet rock.

Going to give bottom watering a go and see if that helps. Does humidity on the outside of the chamber affect the inside in any way? I only ask because it's cold as hell where I live and my house stays relatively dry. I could invest in a humidifier if this is common practice.

I also added more perlite. I was at about 2-3 inches before, and after doing a little more research I read that a lower level will dry out quicker. There's around 4-5 inches now so we'll see if this makes any difference

Just wanted to share some pictures of how much my cakes benefited after bottom-watering them in case any other newb like myself was having the same troubles. I had zero pins before bottom-watering, and this is day 4 after starting. Thank you amidogen for pointing me in the right direction. Fucking love this community. We're all we've got.

So I should continue bottom-watering them overnight? Or is it recommended to bottom-water them 24/7 to support the pins?

Just some progress pictures. So if I'm not planning on making spore prints with these, optimal time for harvest would be right as the veil begins to break away correct?

Keep on an eye on them. They grow very fast now. Check morning noon and night and harvest when the veils are about to break. If only a handful are ready and others have some time left, you can put them in a paper bag in the fridge until everything else catches up. Or use the early birds for prints. They look fairly consistent though. Bottom water them again after harvest. It looks like your first flush / flush-and-a-half has all it needs.

Good job.

Thank you! I thought I had f'd up and these were a lost cause.

Should I not re-dunk these and bottom water them instead? I know not to re-roll them in verm for the second flush, but I thought it was standard practice to dunk them again for 12-24 hours?

Nice pics

And yes dunk after every flush. Re-rolling in verm is optional.
