Hallucinogenic plants and arrows
    #23991494 - 01/08/17 01:45 AM (7 years, 1 month ago)

So I just got done reading a rather peculiar article about tribes in the Amazon and their use of phyco active plants in particular their use on arrows and spears.
It appears they mix a preparation of datura and a few other choice plants to form a deadly cocktail in which they coat their weapons.
My assumption for the addition of various hallucinogenic or deliriant plants is to make any prey hit with such an arrow helpless until the poison kicks in
(in almost all tribes globally curare).

This made me think about the classical movie scene were the hero is tagged with an arrow causing hallucinations and mental confusion.
It also got me looking at my collection of various plants wondering if any of these harmless little critters could do the same thing.

What do you guys reckon?
Any "magic herbs" that when introduced cutaneously or intravenously would cause the classic movie effect.

In particular I was wondering about Salvia divinorum.
Don't get the wrong idea this is purely theoretical.

So with all that said all opinions/experiences welcome.

It's not a plant thing, but going 'hybrid' with dart frogs, I bet an arrowhead coated with waxy monkey tree frog venom would put a little wobble in your step.

For some reason the people down there burn their skin and then rub the venom in their burns but I bet so long as you get a little in your blood stream it would still work and your average arrowhead could be coated in a overly massive dose.

I think some poison ivy boiled down into a strong concentrated liquid, would make an excellent weapon. You could just spray it even.  Not immediately fatal, possibly not fatal at all to someone resistant, but sure would cause misery.... I bet if you could get into blood or under skin via dart, itd be even that much worse.

This was an experiment.

Both good ideas I was about to dismiss the frog but then looked it up and HOLY HELL what a cocktail.
Only problem that I can see with the frog is it would have to be collected wild each time due to its inability to produce poison in captivity.

I imagine ivy extract in a cut would feel much like having ants and powdered glass inside you eek.:ooo:
Any specific cultivar in mind?

In general, it would take a devoted effort to source enough of these tender leaves, but the principle should be simple.

To the best of my understanding, enough does have an irritant effect upon oral mucosa and spinal ganglia.

I believe it has a toxic quality, is just not prone to abuse.

I have never seen any research, on this subject, which I would consider to be reputable.

Different interactions are mainly being reported, anecdotally, in terms of herbal supplements and legal highs.

I think primitives would have used intuitive methods and tried to remember the results, in a game of telephone.

But, you come from a tribe of people, and tribes of people used to inhabit your own locale. Sometimes, there is nothing more exotic than the culture, right under your nose.

The frog's favorite foods, and their favorite foods, can be grown in a terrarium, btw. Since there are valuable, medical applications, herpers have been incredibly lazy, afaic.

So as far as your aware S.divinorum has little to no phycoactive effect via direct blood contact?

As far as the tribes in my area you are right they often have experience dealing with these sorts of things.
There was one elder whom I spoke to a long time ago who said that poisoning weapons was a taboo even for hunting as it "tainted" them with bad spirits.
So in regards to what the natives in my area used no luck.

In regards to the frogs it seems that yes you could get the food they eat but you would have to get that animals food and so on so it would be a ridiculously large terrarium.

I remember reading of a group of I believe Swedish scientists who were attempting to get Amazonian dart frogs to produce toxins in captivity for cancer research.
After much spending they figured it was cheaper and less time consuming to source the frogs naturally.
I don't have  Swedish govt funding.

Same thing with puffer fish I believe.

Then again this is all theoretical.

I think that subsidized science is in it, for the chase.

But, it shouldn't be unduly complicated.
