Help me cultivate Panaeolus Cyanescens
    #24011645 - 01/15/17 09:46 AM (7 years, 15 days ago)

Hello my fungi friends! I've been around The Shroomery for a few months now and decided to make an account as I am relatively new to mushroom cultivation and need some assistance in cultivating some pan cyans, especially from those that have experience in growing these meanies.

I'm from Washington State but moved to the Philippines in August for family reasons, and saw this as an opportunity to start cultivating some pan cyans, due to their natural occurrence here, so I didn't think it would be too difficult.

I already took a very crude crack at it, using a substrate of cow manure (picked from my uncle's farm), straw (also from the farm), and verm (from a local hardware store). Mixed it all together and pasteurized at 160 degrees fahrenheit using the pillowcase method.  I would've pressure cooked it but I had no autoclavable bag to use, as I was going for bulk. I waited until it was dry enough to use and took some of the substrate and put it in a jar for spawning, while the rest I dumped into a monotub I had already prepared.  I had picked some cyans the day before and took a few prints and used them to inoculate the jar.  Waited until the jar colonized and transferred it to the tub. However, the substrate didn't fully colonize, which I'm still wondering why that is.

Overall, the cultivation was successful, but not as successful as I had hoped, only yielding about 16 fruits a flush. :frown:

I have some prints ready to try again. This time I think I'm going to case using 50 verm and 50 peatmoss, as well as spawn from rye grain.  I'll be going back home March 31st only to come back here by the end of May, so maybe I can pick up some supplies that I can't get here.

Anyways, I have a few questions:

-So the humidity and temperature here is a little lower around this time of year (around 83%-88% humidity and 73-75 degrees) which is lower than the ideal conditions for pan cyan growth. Will this affect my growth negatively?

-Should I case? It's not a very sterile environment and I am a little concerned about contaminants if I do.

-Any tips and recommendation for my next try?

Thank you in advance!

Also, i had tripped with the last batch I had grew, and oh man, was it quite the experience! Should I post a trip report??

Sounds like perfect conditions to me mate. 70%+ Rh will be fine.

Definitely case it. Retaining water at the surface will benefit immensely. It's outdoors anyways right? Contams won't be an issue like they are indoors. Contams thrive immensely on indoors lack of FAE. It's harder for the contams, but better for the shrooms outside where there's so much FAE

I think their trip is better than cubes, it's much clearer. I've never had azures :frown:

Casing it is then!  How often should I mist? My last flush was a bit waterlogged.

if you want to get good consistent results with pan cyans you're going to have to learn to clean the mycelium up on agar. pan mycelium is easily susceptible to competitor pathogens that mix in with the mushroom spores but by growing it out on agar first you can separate it from the other bacteria and molds and get a clean culture. and many growers seem to prefer to spawn colonized grains to manure substrate rather than going straight to manure. i don't know how available rye is in the Philippines but WBR(whole brown rice) will work just as well and it has less endospores.

Only mist when the substrate looks dry, just like cubes.
