Bulk Pasteurization for Dumbies

So, I was looking around on the internet for a precision heating element, for something unrelated to mushrooms, and I stumbled upon this badboy:
Anova Culinary Bluetooth Precision Cooker

Apparently it will bring water to a precise temperature, while circulating it, and keep it at that temperature. The first thing I thought was how great this would be for bulk pasteurization. I use an oldschool method for pasteurization that I got from RR, and it's probably not terribly precise, though it seems to work alright. I thought this might be a way to more precisely achieve the temperatures we're after, with little effort.
Just a thought. This bad boy can be remotely controlled via smart phone too, apparently. I think it has Bluetooth...
I was thinking you could put bulk subs in a bag, submerged in a giant pot full of water, and set it to pasteurization temp. You could stick a thermometer into the bulk sub, and once the center reached temperature, set a timer, and leave it to do its thing.
Anyway, what do you fellas think? Does anyone have experience with these?
I'm curious how efficient this guy is, and how big of a container I could use it in.

I think I will, because I wanna play with some new species, and I would like to know that everything is just the way it's supposed to be.
I might just pick one up in the next couple days. Waiting on some money from a friend.
I think I'm going to wait and see what input some other folks around here have before I blow $100+ on this guy though.

Looks interesting, its only 800w though so it might take a while to get to temp for bulk amounts of water. Would be good for small operations though im sure

I have 2 comments for bulk water pasteurization...Big metal food grade drum, and a tiger torch or two. Those are like 200,000 btu each. Ice cold water to 160 in 1 hour, in winter. The water circulates by itself.

Quick note: That is for sous-vide cooking and, no joke, you can make the best steak you ever had using that and a vacuum sealer.

damn $130
i use a 20$ digital meat thermometer with a wireless probe and my smallest burner on high. maintains temps all day.
who needs that fancy sous-vide shit. ive seen it work. learn to cook, dont use crutches.
 (same with mycology)
but that thing would be cool. $130 is just for me

I appreciate that note... I'm trying to justify this purchase, so keep them coming. I have a lady friend who doesn't appreciate all the cash I blow on grow supplies lol!

Yes, but they requires actively watching the thermometer, etc... All you would really have to do is heat the water in a pot to like 140+ before you even start... That takes a lot of work out of the equation little heating element deal..

Personally, if you want to eat a perfect steak, you have to use the right heat source. I prefer the residual body heat of it's former owner.

Damn straight.
That was a 4lb rib roast. 180f for 1hr per lb. Remove at 115f and rest covered in foil at least 1hr. Blast in 500f after resting and a few min before serving.

I'm gonna have to try that. You're not helping me justify buying my bulk pasteurization device, however!

you would add hot water initially and use it to warm it up. If it is still too low you would add pots of boiling water. 800W is enough to keep a bit pot up to temperature. I had a 50L beer keg and with a few sweaters on it I reckoned it was losing maybe 300-400W being held at about 100C.

Exactly. You start off with fairly hot water. Maybe not necessarily boiling, but you have to get the substrate up to temp before you set your timer anyway... Once you do that though, you could set this thing to a precise temperature, and leave it.
The way I pasteurize shit right now, is to load it into jars, put into my PC, bring the water to a boil, and throw the lid on. Then let it sit for 2 hours or so...
I could see this thing working really well on a quite large insulated container. Possibly a large cooler, or insulated drum, or something.

is that worth a buck thirty? a digital meat probe is awesome. get one instead. after awhile you get used to how much to boil the water. you start to learn the water, man.

If you're too busy to babysit a pot, I think it is.

It's worth the money in my opinion. I have a system like that set up inside an old chest cooler and its amazing. Load bulk material, prime with hot water, and set heating element to temp. I take naps during runs.

What do you use as the heating element? Do you use one of these badboys?
I never ended up buying it, as I had to take a break from growing for a while. Probably, since around the time I made that post. By the way, this thread is old as fuck lmao!

I have a Sansaire Sous Vide and I will tell you that I wont waste my time grilling a steak ever again. That being said I didn't even consider using it to pasteurize my substrate!. When I do large items I use a cooler that has a hole cut in it and it holds heat in my 10 gallon cooler just fine. It also holds temp within .5 of a degree F I believe. I will try using mine the next time I prepare my HPoo substrate as it will be way easier than messing with the stove top! I will report back soon!

Maybe you can make a little write-up. I'd read that. Enthusiastically even.
