Just had my first farmers market today... only brought 4 lbs because I wasn't sure if I was even going to make one sale. But I sold out after 2 hours... I only got about 60 bucks but holy shit, I still cant believe people were actually handing me cash and taking my mushrooms without hesitation. Time to kick things up a notch.
This isnt really adding anything to the forum... Im just excited So how much weight do you guys usually go through in one market?

Better to sell out with just a few pounds than take shrooms home! 20-30lbs per market has been our average, but it really depends on your market. Don't forget to take grow kits, health information, recipes, etc. Explain why your freshly harvested, local product is superior to supermarket buttons and bellas. And most importantly show up EVERY market. So many people make the mistake only using markets to dump excess product, but you will not gain a decent customer base this way. Good luck and keep on shroomin!

yeah a lot of people where asking questions about health benefits and recipes and I wasnt really prepared for that. I need to be a little more well versed. And have some info to hand out. I'll get better and better as it goes.

I almost always made more off 'grow your own' kits than fresh shrooms but maybe that not typical. $20 for a shiitake bag , they are pretty hard not to get any mushrooms off of.

hmmm... that sounds like a great idea. Im looking offer something a little different than the other mushroom guy in my area.
Is your shiitake kit just basically a sawdust block and some instructions? Do do you sell oyster kits too? what do you use for them? i looked on your fb but didnt see anything

I normally just pull a few blocks from my regular production(oyster or shiitake) that way if they don't sell you just throw them right back in production. 20 bucks a block is the most you can really hope to make anyway for fresh shrooms,so if you can get rid of the blocks for the same $$ all the better. Just give folks a bag and instructions and send them on their way. We started including a little square of agribon fabric with the kits for a 'humidity tent'. Works great.

Im just a little worried if I bring a bag with a disgusting brown block of fungus and put it out on the table, and tell everyone this is where all my mushrooms come from, that it might do more to harm me than help me. Lots of people came up to me and started asking questions about how I grow. I tried to just tell them they grow on "wood" but the more they pried I had to say "sawdust" and I could tell they didnt like that answer... I could only imagine what they would think if I told them I was growing on fuel pellets. How do you guys describe your process in a palatable way to your customers?
The other mushroom guy can easily just tell customers they grow on logs even tho the vast majority of his shrooms are grown in bags... I dont do logs so I cant say that.

Disgusting? Strike that word from your vocabulary in this context. If you don't see the beauty in the product you're selling your customers won't either. You grow on enriched hardwood sawdust. The bag is really just an artificial log, with the plastic acting as the bark and the sawdust and bran acting as the nutrients. The bags give you a very rare insight into the natural process of the 'secret'mushroom life cycle. You need to explain what the vegetative state of mycelium is and how it gets to be a mushroom. And how a mushroom is very much like a flower in that it is the reproductive body of the mycelium. If it's shiitake, explain the browning phase. Most people find this absolutely fascinating.
Practice your pitch and make it concise. If you don't know why they should buy it, how will they?
